Any suggestions of the best lock or the one to avoid? I'm thinking of a combination lock, but don't know best brand. Thanks

first of all, locks are primarily a deterrent. none will keep your laptop safe if someone is determined to take it.

now that we have that out of the way, though, the most secure are those with normal slot-key locks, like the door to your house or padlocks. combination and barrel-lock designs are relatively easy to defeat, but whoever's trying to take your computer would have to have practiced first. it's very unlikely that someone who merely heard about how to defeat them could do so on their first try.

Laptop locks serve a very useful purpose: to deter the quick snatch when you're out and about with your laptop, such as at the library. You would never want to leave your laptop alone for very long. However, there are times when you may take your eyes off it for just a minute or two or even for a few seconds when a thief could snatch it. Opportunists strike quickly. Two people working as a team could very easily prey on your laptop in which one distracts you while the other grabs and goes. Here, the security cable works fairly well.

Check out Kensington's ComboSaver:

Keep in mind that it's only a theft deterrent. Lojack is also a good idea.
