thats very helpful thank you!

anyone else? i like a lot of the features of macs so i would like to find a pc that is comparable

Lenovo is definetely the best choice. The thinkpads are not very pretty, but they have lots of good options, they have amazing lifespans compared to other pcs (in some cases even comprable to macs) and on top of all that, Lenovo gives a 10% discount to students from hundreds of universities. Just go to the Lenovo website, and at the to select Solutions for -> students, then choose your university and they will automatically take the discount out of anything you shop for, awesome deal

It’s not necessarily a brand but a line. Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes, HP Envy, etc. I like Lenovo myself. If you go with the lower lines, you get more commodity components and also not as strong of a case. They’re great. I can tell you stories of great Dell Inspirons, etc. The case isn’t as durable, and if it’s being lugged around 24/7, that might be a problem for some people. As for Macs, they only have a premium line, but they’re macs and that’s a problem for some people.

the main computers ive been considering are the hp envy, hp envy beats audio edition, and lenovo thinkpad w series. what do you think of those?

any thoughts on those?

On Lenovo:W series is workstation graphics. I dont know if Lenovo has a non-workstation graphics laptop with Sandy Bridge, But I imagine its less. Either way it looks strong but I recommend going with the 1600x900 display on the basis of improved screen real estate (IMO well worth $50 more). I don’t recommend improving the HD through lenovo though, as replacing it yourself (especially with the SSDs) is cheaper (plus you get the original drive too).

HP Envy: Eh, I havent really heard anything bad about it yet. But I havent really heard anything good either. I imagine you are/had looked into the quality yourself anyways. Either way, I expect the line will be updated with Sandy Bridge before terms start in fall.

ok thanks. how do you think those compare to macbook pro?

If you’re looking for performance I’d check into some of the clevo resellers (system76 for Linux users, sager/avadirect for windows). They’re pretty cheap for the quality of build you’ll be getting.

^The System76 site is actually really cool if you like using linux. Its nice to see a company offering linux as the main OS on their PCs. Their pretty no frills in terms of appearance, but its still a welcomed addition when looking for a new computer. Thanks alot for the link.

Yeah, you won’t get Mac aesthetics with a clevo reseller but you’re definitely going to get the hardware you pay for and some solid support (each reseller provides support for their rebranded laptops). I haven’t really compared prices to other pc brands but to get macs with the performance of like a 1500 dollar clevo laptop, you end up well into the low to mid 2000’s. I’d been looking through the forums and it’s almost entirely Dell, hp, toshiba, etc. Didn’t know why clevo had never popped up!
