best laptop?

Ok so I'm gonna be at the engineering school this fall as a freshman. What laptop recommendations?

I'm thinking either a Macbook or a Lenovo Thinkpad T series

MacBook Pro Cuzz :)

would you recommend a 15 inch screen? the macbook I thought was a 13 inch and the pro a 15 inch? (LSA Student)

I use a Macbook Pro, it's very nice but don't get it unless you're gonna use it's FULL power. It's too much of a price to justify it.

I'd get a Macbook. It's a solid notebook, light, and I'm a sucker for shiny things.

Ok, does U of M's internal computer infrastructure have like a general preference for Mac vs. Windows?

Nope......

I am going to buy a notebook too.

i was wondering what type of internet connection UMich uses. I do not live in the United States so I don't know what ports/connection that US uses. Do laptops bought in Hong Kong work in the United States (as in the internet connection and cables, etc etc.) are they different?

thanks.

does anyone have any experience with a tablet pc?

"Nope......"

wrong, OP is majoring in engineering.
for engineering, get a pc. All caen computers are pcs.
caen is the engineering network..it's hard to remote access caen with a mac

Dell Xps M1530! :)

15 inch is overkill unless you keep it at home and use it as a desktop. 13 inch fits better in bags.

Dell xps m1330 from Dell Outlet - Refurbished Computers - Refurbished Laptops - Refurbished PCs

Can get one for $1000 with all the upgrades, such as the LED backlit screen, finger print scanner, etc...
Macbooks don't even have dedicated graphics....

^^^^^^^^
XPS M1330 don't have dedicated graphics either.

Yeah they do.
It isn't the most powerful, but it is leaps and bounds better than integrated.
8400m gs 128mb

Also, if you don't care about weight too much, the Dell Vostro line has probably the best performance/price ratio of any laptop.

What is the LED backlight screen all about? Is it worth spending an extra $150?

Also, on Dell's site, you can choose the resoultion of the screen (1440x900, 1680x1050, or 1920x1200). The high resolution would obviously be more clear, but I'm worried that since the pixels are so small, I'd have to squint when I'm looking at the screen. Anyone know the deal with high res?

The LED screen is just better technology. It is brighter and more energy efficient than a traditional LCD laptop screen. This means you will have a better picture with longer battery life. Also, the screen doesn't dim over time like traditional LCD screens do.

On a 13.3 inch screen 1440x900 is fine. For a comparison, the native resolution of a macbook is 1280x800.

On CAEN Macs, the Remote Desktop Connection software is available at:

Applications folder > Communication Tools > Remote Desktop Connection

If you have a personal Mac computer, Microsoft offers a free download of the Remote Desktop Connection client. See the Other Products section of the following web page:

You can also remotely connect to the Linux CAEN computers in either Windows or Mac via a CAEN-specific VNC client. It's all pretty easy.

is anyone going to answer my question on floor 8?

thanks a lot

dilksy...pc can do a graphics connection with linux while mac can only do a binary connection to caen. That's the first thing professor daida told us in our first engin101 class. Which means there are certain programs a mac cannot run on remote caen while PC can and some functions, specially graphic ones are LIMITED

and as I said, all caen computers ARE PCs

I stumbled upon this beauty the other day in my own personal laptop search.

Newegg.com - ASUS F8 Series F8Sp-X1 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T5750(2.00GHz) 14" Wide XGA 3GB Memory DDR2 667 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 - Laptops / Notebooks

It's probably about the equivalent if not better than some of the macbook pros for about half the price.
