Just wondering what type of laptop/program software are recommended for an engineering student at Ohio State. Anyone with experience please post. thanks!

Might want to post on the Ohio State subforum. Also, if you have certain majors (engineering, architecture) there may be some specific suggestions or requirements.

ITA this is NOT the forum to post questions about computers. I asked about the new Macbook pro with the new Intel processors and it totally died on the vine. Stick to asking your peers either at your college sub-forum or for your major or even college life.

Better yet - ask OSU computer support department. Good luck!

DS (OSU engineer) bought a laptop (I think it’s a HP Elite book) at Wired Out on campus so that he’d have convenient service available. They were knowledgeable about computing needs for various majors and the laptop was not too expensive. We got it and some software at orientation and brought it home to customize and try out before he returned in September. He has had no complaints except that he doesn’t like the sound quality. Post to the OSU forum and you might get more advice.

I was VERY surprised that ME student son chose a Mac. It has been great. But I agree that the OSU forum is the place to get the answer.

I concur with the suggestion of checking with the school itself. Northwestern University’s IT Dept has a nice PDF on the website that addresses the particulars, plus links to any schools that have particular requirements (e.g. engineers need to have the Matlab software.) It also addresses issues about TV, cell and land line telephones, etc. Even a handy dandy check list of what to do before coming to campus, since it’s advisable to get the computer prior to arrival and have it set up, so there’s one less thing to tend to at move in.
