I was really looking at a school like Reed until I discovered that a double major in philosophy and creative writing would be nearly impossible with the core requirements. My only criterion are that it is a liberal arts school, it has very strong programs in both philosophy and creative writing (or a major similar to creative writing, since that's difficult to come across at a liberal arts school), and I can major in each. Any ideas? Thank you! :)

Knox College. They have one of the strongest creative writing programs in the country. It’s also one of the most popular majors at Knox, so there’s a thriving community of writers on campus. I’m a Knox alum from way back who almost double-majored in chemistry and philosophy, but opted for a year-long research project instead of the second major.

Thank you spdf. Any other suggestions?

My S is doubling at Colgate in Philosophy & English…I am more aware of their Philosophy dept which I am told is one of the best departments at the school. English seems good too, and I know they have many creative writing offerings, but S has no experience in them.

here’s the Colgate English dept site: http://www.colgate.edu/academics/departments/english

looks like one can emphasize Creative Writing within an English major:

Amherst is supposed to be excellent in Philosophy and they have some noted writers on the faculty but it all depends on your stats.

More than “nearly impossible” - Reed does not allow double majors.

Reed does allow double majors, it’s just exceedingly difficult to pull off in eight semesters (ten semesters are sometimes granted).
