best major to research nanotech

hi i just wanted to know what you think is the best school/major/degree (bs,md,phd) to later research in nanotechnology. and also what a starting salary might be

Chemestry, Chemical Engineering, possibly Bio as well... When you are dealing with things on that scale Quantum Theory begins to come into play which has overlap between Chemestry and Physics. As far as a degree goes, a PhD will be required to do heavy duty research.

what about a good college for those majors?

Well, for Chem E, I have to plug the University of Minnesota. Number 1 (or 2 depending on who you ask.) As for the other majors, in Physics, University of Chicago is strong, MIT, a lot of the big state schools especially ones with established engineering programs. Do some searching in the engineering forum as well as this one and you should be able to find lists of schools. By the way, there is no "One Best School" For example I won't even look at Georgia Tech even though it is ranked number 4 in engineering. The location of the school doesn't interest me. To find "your" school, you need to take into account a number of factors, some which will be weighted more than others, but the ones you weight heavier are likely to be different than the ones that i do.

thanks for your opinion

I would say Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.

Here are the best places to study chemistry, in the country:

Your best bet is to get a strong background in chemistry (which will of course include a good deal of physics and math). If you get a good faculty mentor and do research, you will be hooked up directly with the best nanotech researchers/labs in the world, where you can then earn a Ph.D. and become a famous researcher. You have to start with a solid undergrad foundation and preferably go to a school where undergraduates get a lot of personal attention. From the above list, I'd say that Caltech, Yale and MIT are your best bets, by far, and of those Yale and Caltech have the strongest departments and the most personal attention given to undergrads.
