oh that's because those were logic classes. But I'd say most phil classes require papers.

Most of the departments here are at least solid. Rice is better-known for the sciences and engineering, but we're making huge gains in some of the Humanities departments, especially English and History. I'm a Poli Sci major, and I've been happy with the department. Religious Studies is supposedly solid, and I've heard that Economics is good once you get past ECON 211 (Hooray for hopelessly idealized worldviews!). The only department I've heard bad things about is Cognitive Science.

So, really, you can major in whatever you want at Rice and not have to worry about a "weak department."

yeah.. a major from Rice still holds the Rice brandname..

And yeah.. apart from ECON 211 (which SUCKS), the remaining courses are said to be good

there is not really a cognitive sciences department. it is only an agreement of professors who are in other departments and they have a major. it's basically an interdepartmental major that became really popular.

what about physics at Rice? How good is the department/professors/curriculum and how many students graduate with a degree in physics each year?

I plan to major in astrophysics. I believe the number of students graduating with a degree in physics is around 25-35. I'm only a freshman, so I don't have the most experience with the department, but from my impression, the professors are all very knowledgeable about their subjects and for the most part are very friendly and willing to talk with undergraduates. I think the curriculum prepares students especially well for graduate studies, since undergraduate research is a graduation requirement. I'm definitely looking forward to the years ahead.

Does anyone know anything about the Sports Management program? It's the main reason I'm applying, although I might've applied anyway even without the existence of that major because I love absolutely everything I read about Rice.

well, the sport management program is supposedly good. I am in no way involved but a friend is and she loves it

The physsics department is also good. The professors are good and very accesible
