Hello, right now I am planning on majoring in neuroscience and physics; however, I realize that the fields of A.I. and robotics are opening up and will most likely be an abundance of jobs in the future ( Which may also pay well). I realize neuroscience would be a good major, but physics is not really associated with this future ( If it is please let me know lol). What would another major alongside neuroscience would be desirable in this field? Computer science? Psycology? Please let me know! (:
If you love physics, consider it as a minor. Computer science or cognitive science might be better minors though.
^^ THIS
Psychology would be useless. Comp sci ideal. There are some majors like “smart systems” and “AI” but they’re really rare…
Psychology wouldn’t be useless, but it wouldn’t be nearly as useful as a computer science major. I think cognitive science would be the most ideal major as it combines elements of computer science, psychology, and other fields together and addresses the ethical as well as technical questions behind AI.
I think physics would be useful in terms of technically designing the robots, but if you are more interested in the intelligence aspects, I think cognitive science and computer science would be your best bets.
Physics is the science of understanding the physical world. It provides an education in methodically and systematically parsing a problem and understanding how to model a system so that it is tractable to prediction of future behaviors. Computer science can be determining how most efficiently to pose a problem so that a computer can accurately solve it.
If you want to understand the context of the system (be it the brain, neural firing timings, routing of neural pathways, how a scene is perceived or a scent smelled), you would be well served to study physics. If you want to understand how to implement this understanding efficiently into an artificial system using hardware or software, you may tend towards the study of Comp Sci.
I do not understand neuroscience in the context of an undergraduate major- I would major in biology, biochemistry, physics, or computer science. Specialize in graduate school (or in elective classes/labs/research).
