Hi, I know that people say that one is lucky to get into any med school, but I was still wondering, when considering med schools, which ranking takes more weight? "Top Medical Schools-Research" or "Top Medical Schools-Primary Care"?
I am just a little confused since I saw that HMS is not on the second one. Any comments will be appreciated? I am not going to base my decision on the ranking but since I know nothing about the schools at this point, I recon it is a good place to start.

1.) Um, that depends on whether you're more interested in research or primary care...

2.) As a Chinese-American myself, I can tell you that my parents' friends care much more about the "research" list, for reasons that really make no sense to me.

3.) Do notice that US News publishes some rankings for certain types of specialties, as well.

4.) Obviously USN is not the be-all and end-all. If you listen closely to the way doctors talk about medical schools, their list of the top few schools in the country does not tend to correlate perfectly with either of the USN lists.

on a related issue, what would be some of the better "research" med-schools?

Don't mistake this question for my thinking that i'll ever actually have to choose between med schools. lol

If you're actually interested in conducting research, then by all means, I think the US News rankings are probably reasonable.
