Hi, I wanted to ask a question on here. It’s concerning a minor for my major.
My major is currently Organizational Communication (management sequence) and my minor is currently Psychology.
I’m thinking about changing my minor because at first I thought psychology was a fine major since I associated Psychology with I/O psychology and I felt like it’d connect with Organizational Communication since both fields promote communication and statistics within an organization.
But lately I am considering changing my minor like business (management, accounting or marketing) or even Journalism (I’m interested in broadcast journalism. It’s a field I feel like I’d enjoy and the college I attend has several internships available for journalism, film and media students).
OC was my major too (a very, very long time ago… like in the Dark Ages.) My minor was Journalism/Public Relations. Like you, I had an interest in broadcasting… put that together with sportswriting in an internship and did play-by-play of the basketball games on the campus radio station. It was really great fun. I recommend going for the things you really enjoy, rather than just “what would fit well with this major”. Good luck! And have fun.
How was the job outlook for you? Was your concentration/sequence management?
I really wanted to open a business but I have a lot of student loans so I’ll save that for later. With a minor for broadcast journalism can you still go on the news?
I honestly thought as human resource management as a career field but I’d have to start from the bottom to get there.
I have never had a position as an “Organizational Communications person.” Among other things over the past 40 years or so, I have been an events planner, a crisis counselor, executive assistant to the CEO of a huge investment bank, a travel writer, curatorial coordinator for a very fine art museum, and a publicist/photographer in major league sports. And I used the knowledge and skills I acquired in college in every single one of those very interesting jobs.
With organizational communications are you ever allowed to become a manager or own your own business? This major is really worrying me now. I just want to make an adequate amount of income to pay off my student loans.
I’m also wondering if a business minor would help compliment the major and my chances of getting a good job.
