My friend is looking for a college with the following criteria, do you have any suggestions? He has a few APs under his belt, pretty good grades and amazing, focused ECs. His first SAT scores were not that great but he is planning to raise them a lot the second time! He is a regionally recognized musician and is planning to go for a double major in music performance and science. Let me know!

-strong, research-based science department
-great music department, both vocal and instrumental preferably
-small class size and student to teacher ratio
-preferably not in a city, but definitely open to good colleges you feel are worth mentioning!

He is looking at JHU and Carnegie but he wants other options, both top-tier universities and liberal arts colleges (he seems to be partial toward LACs) as well as colleges that could be more of a match or a safety for him. Thanks so much!

Tell him to check out SUNY Stonybrook and Ithaca College

What are his stats, what is his intended science major, and what instrument does he play? He could try for a joint major at URochester/the Eastman School of Music as a reach…though the conservatory is incredibly competitive (and the coursework is probably grueling).

Double majors are often stressful. I’d imagine one would have trouble squeezing in study time while focusing in an area as intense as Music Performance. Has he looked into colleges that allow him to take private lessons through their music school while majoring in another area?

I have the perfect plan for him no joke…Carnegie Mellon’s BXA program have him search it up…I recently went to a CMU regional tour and questionaire session and the adcom guy mentioned this program. He said that you can have one degree in a sciences and the other in a fine arts. Perfect. Literally a guy majored in like musical analytics by computer science algorithms or something of the sort. Definitely have him check it out. Link: <a href=“Programs - BXA Intercollege Degree Programs - Carnegie Mellon University”>http://www.cmu.edu/interdisciplinary/programs/

@pieguy321 OP said his friend was already looking at CMU ;)

He is top 10, has around a 3.8 uw and has such bad sat scores he refuses to tell me (lower than 1700 he said) but he can take them again and im sure he’ll do a lot better. on practice tests he was scoring in the 1800 range at least. he plays bassoon and sings tenor 1. :)

Has he tried taking the ACT? Some students prefer one over the other. Unless he gets his SAT up to 2000+ (higher for JHU/CMU), those and URochester will be reaches, barring a drastic shortage of musically-qualified bassoon players. Ithaca/Stony Brook sound like high/mid matches with his current score.

IMO he should look into test-optional schools, as his GPA is fairly strong. Not sure how Bard is in the sciences, but it’s on the list and has a conservatory. However, its double major program looks like it only offers a B.A/B.M.

^^I believe Ithaca actually is test optional, so it is really looking like a good match on all fronts.
