My son is a sophomore bassoon player considering studying music. By this I mean the performance route. We are still going back and forth a lot between music performance and something like science, but if he decides to go for the music completely, what are the best schools for bassoon? I know the teacher/faculty is very important so I am wondering who are considered the best teachers. Also, how competitive are admissions for bassoon compared to other wind instruments? Thanks!

Ben Kamins at Rice University is considered one of the two or three best teachers of bassoon in the world. Very competitive admissions as you would imagine.

Try doing a search in the music major forum for bassoon teachers. I believe there was a thread just like this that should have a lot of the answers you are looking for :)

Thanks for the response. I was able to find a thread with some other schools/teachers mentioned. I will bookmark that one for when we get a little closer to decisions.

Does anyone know anything about Peabody Bassoon Week? My son would like to attend this summer but I’m just curious if anyone that has gone has any feedback. Thanks.

Ben Kamins was my recommendation as well. He has a wonderful approach to music, is tremendously insightful, and he also happens to be a really nice guy.

John Clouser and Barrick Stees teach at CIM. They’re both amazing teachers and the connections with the Cleveland Orchestra are important. Worth checking out!
