Best Musical Theater Schools

Who said anything about BOCO? All I did was ask a few questions to compile specific information before offering advice or an opinion.

OK beenthereMTdad - the way I have been reading this thread is that people post as much information as they can; the OP can then sift through things if she wants. The more details the OP provides in her question, the more concise the answers are going to be. In the case of “what is the best MT program?” there is hardly only one correct answer.

The way I see it is that everybody is just trying to help. SoozieV’s message refers to her answering to another post/discussion that arose in the midst of this thread. We all know that threads tend to digress and go off track quite often, especially when someone jumps at a tidbit of information and asks for more details. That she volunteered information about BoCo I read as her simply referring to another expensive program.

Since the OP does not appear to be posting regularly and has not jumped at your requests for more information, she may simply already have the answers she is looking for.

With all due respect, the original poster’s question was very broad, which is why someone suggested that he/she take the time to peruse the long list of schools at the top of the forum and begin from there.

As soozievt and others have said, the nature of this board is that someone asks a question or makes a statement/observation and others expand on it, resulting in a discussion that branches out into various other topics. That’s the way conversations go: people rarely go straight from Point A to Point B when they converse. :)

I certainly hope OP posts again and lets us all know if he/she needs any more help.

Annnnnnnnnd redirecting topic. The “best” MT school is always up for debate. And how you look at it can change your results also. Sometimes a school can be the best because it is the “best” foryou! :)

I am sure you know all about CCM, UM, CMU, NYU, OCU, etc

If none of those work out…

Depending on how far you are willing to go. Go down the list of MT schools that are listed on the home page and see if any of their websites spark your interest.

There are many talented, brilliant professors out there that can make you into a talented performer and they don’t only reside at those top schools you always here about.

Perhaps this site would be helpful for researching schools & programs:

[Schools for Theatre](http://www.schoolsfortheatre.com/index.php)

I’d be careful using that site above - there are quite a few major programs missing from their “list.” I think the big list listed here on CC is a more complete resource.

Following what actormcfamous already refers to, please know that this site only lists programs that have signed up to ‘advertise’ their programs so far. My guess is that this will be one of those “works in progress”. I so like its clean layout and links to the different schools; the more theatre school info the better. However I would definitely closely compare the info with what is available on CC.

Yes – at a quick glance I noticed the list did not include University of Michgan, which is one of the best-regarded schools in the country. I’m sure others are missing.

University at Buffalo (SUNY) houses a great BFA Musical Theater program.

A warning I placed on another thread - UB has no tenured faculty that are in musical theater, their music director should be coming up for tenure soon - he would be the first. UB has many positives about it but, as a member of SUNY is looking at huge cuts coming due a nearly 2 billion dollar state deficit. SUNY has been cut almost a quarter of a billion dollars this year - those effects will begin to be felt this coming semester, but won’t really hit until next year. The predictions are for even greater cuts in the next year or two. Programs without tenured faculty will be especially vulnerable when these cuts hit, full-force next year. It is likely to be a rough road ahead.
