again, i'm not referring to actual quality, but rather perceived quality

.....

CMU's comp science and business programs are at the top of their respective fields. I don't think many person majoring in bus haven't not heard of
Tepper....

washington in st louis...I am not sure what you mean by the 'average' person but anyone who even cares about college should have an idea about washington.

Oh btw, Cal Tech is very prestigious. I don't know how it ended up in tier 5...

CalTech, IMO, should be right up there with the ivies.

Thank you. Finally someone is starting to make sense....

those who have heard of cal tech would rank it right with the ivies. however, most have not even heard of it.

Isn't CalTech even more selective than MIT?

***, why can't you guys grasp the point of this thread?

most people haven't heard of cal tech?......what are they hearing about? san jose university?

firewalker,
If you go by US News, the universities in the US are divided into "Top Schools" (which I assume encompasses Tier 1 and 2), Tier 3 and Tier 4.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/ranknatudoc_brief.php

Northwestern should be in tier two...i think.

NW's kellogg is very famous but overall it can't compete with the top 2 tier unis...

then i assume the first 60 = tier 1
latter 60 = tier 2

NYU = TIER 1! WHOOOOOO YEA BABY

Does anyone agree with me that Michigan should be much higher up there?!?!

Tier One: Harvard, Yale, Princeton
Tier One and a Half: Columbia, Stanford, MIT
Tier Two: Chicago, Duke, Berkley, Brown...

etc...

I think BC should be a lot closer to the 25-30 range.

BC is no where near anywhere....BC and BU, you can't even tell those apart....

here's an example: i administered a survey for stats asking high schoolers to rank various colleges. there, of course, is a geographical bias, but it still supports some of my points

the schools ended up, in order:
Harvard
Yale
MIT
Princeton
Stanford
Brown
Cornell
Columbia
Dartmouth
Duke
Penn
Georgetown
Emory
Vanderbilt
UNC
Georgia Tech
Cal tech
u chicago
UGA
WUSTL

those were all the schools included, and their final order

Huh? Can you elaborate on your post sympathy?

People don't know Penn or Washington. They do know JHU as a premed machine, though.

many people (that i know, and actually went there) consider jhu to be a misery machine

notre dame is definitely considered to be equivalent to the ivy's. not that the ivy's actually offer the best education in the world.
