My son is interested in nursing. I’ve done a little research on the subject and it seems that a lot of guys drop out of nursing school because the environment isn’t supportive to men and they feel like fish out of water. I’ve seen a couple lists of the ‘best’ nursing programs for guys but they were all big schools. My son needs small classes. He’s a B+ student. Loves the outdoors – hiking, cycling, etc. Prefers a cold climate to a hot one. Any ideas?
I can’t comment about the number of male students in the nursing program but my D has a few friends at Hartwick in upstate NY. It may check other boxes, if not the m:f ratio.
Many students drop out of nursing programs because:
- Many programs require secondary competitive admission after taking a year or two of college courses, where many pre-nursing students are not admitted to finish the nursing major.
- Many direct admit programs have high grade or GPA requirements (like 3.5) to stay in the major.
The above are not gender-specific.
We have a male friend going to Creighton. He loves it.
Creighton is on the top of our list. thank you!
I know several graduates of the nursing program At Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan. All are employed in jobs they really like. One of the graduates is a young man from my neighborhood, who is doing really well in his career. Tuition for OOS students is set at in-state rate if the high school GPA is 2.5+. Freshmen Scholarships It might be worth a look.
I didn’t know about Saginaw Valley State U but will give it a look. Thanks!
