Best options for a lower than average student???

I know Bing, Genesso and maybe New P. are out. Which ones should a kid apply to (he's a jr) that he would have a shot at? All of his A's are in his music courses. He is an great musician (piano) and composes his own music. Crane at Potsdam would be out to, it too competitive. Thoughts????

how about Juilliard?

Check this out and see where your son fits.

Thank you for the info

When a student applies, with an exceptional talent, sometimes a lower GPA and SAT scores will be overlooked.

Is his planning to focus on music as a major? Has he been formally trained or is he self-taught? Music ECs, summer programs, competitions? I'm asking these questions because with musicians it's necessary to have objective assessments of talent and potential in order to have a realistic idea of what programs/schools might be good fits.

Crane is competitive but its not the only strong SUNY music program (its greatest strength is in music ed.) Take a look at Fredonia and Purchase, both have strong music programs. (Purchase is conservatory-style)

Well, he has been taking Piano since 6 yrs old, doing NYSSMA for the past several years and also is in 2 select singing groups at school. He has an excellent voice. He does NYSSMA for voice too. He gives piano lessons to one kid right now. One reason he excels at Music is he is legally blind so his hearing, memory are really good. He can hear a song once and sit down and play, harmony and all. He also writes and has recorded one piece. He has others but can't get him motivated to go to the next step. He has a retinal disease that is slowly robbing him of sight. He is not sure what he wants to do with music but does know he does not want to teach. The rest of the school work is not his forte and it is all a bit challenging to him. He stinks at standardized tests and will be taking SAT's in May. From looking at the websites Fredonia, Purchase look like it would be tough for him to get in. I appreciate the help.

He sounds like an amazing young man that any school would be fortunate to have in their community...write a great essay, focus on the EC's, musical talent, get great recommendations and request an interview...

There are also many SAT optional schools that might welcome the opportunity to have such a talented student...google the list...many are being added each year, as research challenges the valididty of SAT's as a predictor of college success...

Our prayers are with him. If there is any hope for clinical trials that could help him, I would suggest Purchase so he can get into Manhattan.

mansfied university in PA has a good music program. Also has "lower" SAT requirements than Fredonia or Potsdam. Also has good neighbor tuition policy for ny residents so the tuition is about the same as for SUNY's.
Friend of mine is going there. her sats were 960/1600

Your son does sound amazing, I agree with springisintheair. With his accomplishments and talents in the face of serious disability, you may be pleasantly surprised at your son's college options. Stats aren't the only thing, or even necessarily the most important thing, even if he falls below a school's "average" scores.

Thanks so much for all the kind words and different ideas. Nice to know there will be options for him. I also have a son graduating this year so we are finishing up with him and then will move on to 2nd son. Son #2 feels inferior to first born as first born is an A student, driven big time, already accepted at BC, Bentley, Binghamton, Cornell. Still waiting for a few but he has his top 2 choices already accepting him.

2boyshere (me too!!!)

Friends daughter flew up from LI to audition and see Fredonia. She and her Mom loved it. Incredible facilities and the staff seemed wonderful.

They had already seen other schools, considered Crane, auditioned at Delaware and others and they came back ecstatic about Fredonia. I think it is now on the top of her list.
