My child is on very good scholarships at a very very expensive college. Those scholarships are for 4 years only - I do NOT in any way support the 5 year program for her, lol, and I do issue regular written reminders/warnings about this.
that’s really good!!
We have been fortunate in that our old son got a full ride. So with the younger one we are a bit lenient. But honestly, providing full support both emotionally and financially to two music major kiddos takes a lot of courage It’s a bit scary.
When you apply to some double degree programs you may explicitly get funding for 5 years. Like I know Oberlin and Lawrence have been known to do that at times. And if you think about it, for music teachers that may have limited scholarship money to work with you can see why it might benefit their departments in multiple ways to have more music focused students that are in and out in 4 years when they can and aren’t waffling and tying up money for 5 years.
My double degree student is graduating in 4 years. Or so he says, I’ll report back in a year lol. He came in with about 35 gen ed credits and has taken summer classes every summer. He has a music internship right now but has not done an internship in his other degree (computer science). He will probably try to find an internship or co-op type experience next summer, is also considering grad school options in all kinds of directions.
Thank you so much for sharing the personal experience. This is truly encouraging.
I’m curious (seeing this thread is a few months old) what your son ended up with for a list. My son is interested in the same path (except with music and science) and we’ve been scouring the web for the perfect fit, which is not that easy to come by (strong music plus strong academics!). In the end, we found UMich and NU both offer the dual programming my son wants. Oberlin as well, to a lesser degree (ie no engineering, just science). Good luck!
I know Carnegie Mellon has a double major option. We looked at but my kid ended up choosing the conservatory route. Double Major Information - School of Music - Carnegie Mellon University
If CMU is on the list, check out their BXA program-- it’s pretty neat and is done in 4 years, as opposed to some double degrees that can take 5 to complete.
My kid is a double degree at Oberlin. Oberlin doesn’t have a School of Business. It has a Music Business/Administration degree, though.
You need to have your son’s teacher make a list of schools where there are teachers that will be a fit. Next, call and ask for a lesson from those teachers. Make sure they know your son is interested in applying. My son emailed the teachers. Some teachers charge and some schools won’t allow teachers to charge for this lesson.
Figure out which schools have the second degree that your child will also want. Apply.
Good Luck!
