When is the best time to go to freshman orientation? I’m thinking it would be better to go during one of the first times offered so that I’ll have a better chance of getting into the classes I want. Thoughts?

Hi Natalie -

In previous years, I might have agreed with you; however, in the past few years, we’ve made some improvements to how we release courses to ensure plenty of options are made available throughout the month of June. Still, you will find you have more choice in terms of when your courses are available in early June. In other words, you’ll likely come away from orientation with more or less the same courses regardless of when you attend, but, if you like me, are picky about not wanting classes too early (7:30 a.m. chemistry nearly did me in as a student) you would be wise to attend earlier in the month. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have additional questions.

Okay thanks for the help!

I always think it’s problematic if you think you will get credit for May AP exams. You don’t want to sign up for a course in June, then find out in July that you have placed out of it.

Hi missypie -

That can always be tricky. The best thing to do is to have a frank conversation with your advisor about how you did in the class and how you felt you preformed on the test. Some will place you into the class on the expectation you will earn the credit and then adjust the schedule should it no pan out. In other cases, it’s best to start in one course and pick up another when you get your results. In either case, advisors are always happy to help make adjustments throughout the summer. Your schedule is very much fluid until the first day of classes.

Best,
