Best Photo Programs at Liberal Art Schools

Hi! I'm looking to go to a liberal art school with a top photo program. I may decide on photography as a career, but I really enjoy academics and intellectual environments just as much! I have strong grades, am up for 3 APs next year (it will be my first year with APs), ect. I'd like to have a good school with a solid photo program.

I'd love to be in a rural area, but someplace with enough activity.

I'd love to be in an a social setting that is earthy and grounded but intellectual.

Some schools that I am looking at:University of Vermont (though I don't know much about a photo program there), Yale - mentioned by photography teacher.

I'm new to this whole process so any information would be great! And I'd really appreciate it! Also, if you know about the competitiveness of the program or school and could lend any advice about researching schools and programs, please let me know!

Thanks!

NYU has a good photo program, but isn’t rural at all. Also, you need really good grades.

Here are some good schools which have a decent photo major: Bennington College (VT), Bard College (NY), Burlington College (VT), Chatham University ¶, Delaware College of Art and Design, Drexel ¶, Fordham (NY), Hampshire College (MA), Hofstra University (NY), Ithaca College (NY), Maine College of Art, Marlboro College (VT), Parsons The New School for Design (NY), Point Park ¶, Pratt (NY), Providence College (RI), St. John’s University (NY), SUNY Paltz (NY), Suny Purchase (NY), Suny Albany (NY), Syracuse U (NY), Temple U ¶, U of Hartford (CT), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of the Arts ¶

I think the best fits are the following: Bennington, Bard, Hampshire College, Suny Purchase, Ithaca College, Burlington College and Marlboro.

I got all this info from College Board. Sarah Lawrence may also be a good option, but they don’t have majors. It prob. has some classes though.

I recommend SUNY New Paltz…great photo program and very artsy but with a liberal arts environment and lots of other great classes to explore. It’s rural but with a great little funky college town within walking distance to the school and the larger town of Poughkeepsie about 20 minutes away. Very down to earth population. My son transferred here last semester. One of his roommates was a photo major and she really liked it. He is a graphic design major but likes to take classes outside his major and this school gives him that opportunity. Lots to do in the area…fairs, concerts, wineries, hiking, rock climbing, camping, horseback riding, shopping, good restaurants, theater and NYC is about an hour and a half away. Great bus system right at the school to get around town and to NYC/Westchester/Long Island. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
