We just got a solicitation from Traditions bookstore to buy textbooks from them. I heard the MSC bookstore is the most expensive place to buy them. I'm just curious to ask current students, who do you recommend as the best source of textbooks in College Station? Or do many of you get them online? They are so expensive, I just want to make sure we have good info before the New Student Conference.

I am no authority on this matter (I’m not even a student, yet, as you know), but I bought a used “Calculus: Early Vectors” book for engineering math for about $44 on Amazon. From what it seems this book is about $150-$200 buying new. I doubt you can find cheaper than that besides maybe a garage sell, hehe.

My point being, online can be a great place to get decent quality used books for a great price. So, I suggest maybe searching around on Amazon or other related book sites.

Just an update on that Calculus book that I got on Amazon used for $44: I got it today in good time, I pulled it out and almost thought it was new! Except for a few scratches on the hardcover and scuffs, this book could easily pass as new. The pages inside seem untouched and spine is flawless.

Anyways, I’m glad I bought this used book on Amazon. :D

Online is definitely cheaper! I spent ~$900 last semester with all of my engineering related textbooks. You’ll find though, that sometimes, online editions are not the same as the edition your class uses… so the problem sets will be different. This isn’t a problem if your class isn’t math/science related and doesn’t assign homework questions from the book. Sometimes it’s just more convenient to buy from bookstores. IMO, Traditions is probably the cheapest in comparison to Loupot’s or MSC. That’s usually where I buy from.

I agree with gstein…I’m only going to buy maybe another book ahead of time like this because I don’t know for sure the exact books I’ll be using.

I’d recommend only buying online if you know for sure that is the book you need.

Loupots…get a list and take the books they sell used and then get the other books online…

My 2 sons (next year Sophomore & Junior), engineering majors in 2 different Universities brought used books as much as possible. Saving 40-75%. However, not all books can be purchased online. Books written by the professors or in bundle have to be purchase from the U’s bookstore. Make sure you order ahead. If you have to buy from the Us, sometime, bookstore off campus from TAMU is slightly cheaper and you can also pre-order ahead.
