The key is “come to Wisconsin primarily for educational purposes.”

If you moved to Wisconsin right now but did not go to school, worked and lived there for the next year, filed tax returns, registered to vote, got an ID/driver’s license and supported yourself, you might be able to argue that for fall 2012 entry, you should be considered a resident, because you could show ties to Wisconsin outside of any college attendance.

But if you enroll as an out-of-state student for fall 2011, then take the following academic year off, it’s almost certain they’ll consider you as having moved to Wisconsin “primarily for educational purposes” and classify you as a non-resident.

so IF I do NOT go to school for Fall 2011 and work for a year and do all of the above and then go to school at UW Madison in the Fall of 2012, I can reasonably argue that I was in Wisconsin for occupational purposes and NOT for education and therefore be subject to instate tuition for the remainder of my degree?

That appears to be the case. But I would call and speak with the UW’s Residence Counselors to be sure of that policy.

I don’t think it is advisable to make your plans based on what we say or think…

do as polarscribe suggests… call the school and find out.

Better yet, get it in writing?

^^^

True…and find out all the details…like whether you can still be on the “family plan” for health insurance, cell phone, car insurance, etc. Some states require that you be completely independent.

**50-60k for BS in Biomedical
90-150k for a Neuroligist (What I would go to med school for)

I want to go to a high quality institution. I am from Illinois and the best engineering university is U of I which still chargest almost 30k for in state students. UW Madison is only around 7k more so I am forfeiting around 20k after graduation by attending there instead of U of I.

What do you suggest that I do then? **

Why do you want to pay more to go to Wisconsin when you’re already looking at huge debt?

fyi - it’s neurologist

Do you guys think doing this is my best option as I have already signed my lease in Madison and desperately aspire to go there?

I called financial aid and they state that if I do not attend Fall 2011 and then apply again for Fall 2012 then I CAN become a resident by making sure I do multiple things. I would need to register my car in Wisconsin, Register to vote only in Wisconsin, and Pay taxes in Wisconsin (work in Wisconsin). They also stated that I need to be able to work 5-15 hrs a week during the next 3 years until graduation to remain residency as then I would be paying taxes.

I still havent talked to Biomedical Engineering at UW but will do so today about the possibility of readmission to the program in Fall 2012. I have a 4.0 during 39 credit hours right now while having completed Calculus I & II, Gen Chem I & II, and Phys I. What do you think my chances are?

Can you find a full-time job in Madison to support yourself for the next year?

I know I can atleast find a job. Fin. aid told me that I do not need to make a certain amount of money but simply work for the year and pay taxes during that time.
