Best place to live for Graduate Students/ Car Question

I am starting an MPH program this spring. I am trying to figure out where I am going to live and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'd like to be in walking distance from Centre Drive and SW Archer Road beacuse its close to the Health Profession,Nursing, Pharmacy(HPNP) Building. I looked into UF Graduate housing but they have a 12 month waiting list. I'd like a one bedroom or a studio. I have never visited UF, so I was wondering what area is considered the best area to live in (close to campus, close to restaurants, nightlife). Do I need to buy a car? Thanks in advance.

SW 34th street has quite a few good apartments between Archer and University. It's not exactly walking distance, but you could bike there. The UF graduate housing isn't necessarily by campus anyway. Some of them are way down south on 13th street.

Check Craiglist. You may find a six month sublet comming in the Spring.

There a lot of places off 20th Ave and the buses run every 6 minutes to campus. There are signs offering free months rent. Right now there is a glut of empty apartments in Gainesville.
