Best places to go around campus?

Restaurants, stores, activities, events? Places new people into Austin HAVE to go to that are relatively close to campus?

In Austin, it’s all about 6th Street.

Katz’–it never closes!

E. 6th Street

The Drag is an obvious answer.

Katz’ closed for good in January. It’s too bad - I used to hang out there about 30 years ago! At least I got to go one more time in December.

“The Oasis” in the Spring…the view of the lake is fabulous.
Barton Springs/Zilker Park in the Spring/Summer for swimming and canoes.
New Braunfels for tubing in the Spring/Summer
Hut’s Hamburger’s on 6th Street

There is a really cool facebook blogger called 365 things to do in Austin. If you “like” it, it will come up on your newsfeed.

Mount Bonnell has beautiful views, also.

Just a note, 6th Street is kind of a drag unless you’re 21 or older… in my opinion, at least. That said, Esther’s Follies is on 6th and it’s literally the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, ever. It’s basically a live sketch show that resembles SNL but is much raunchier… There are also a lot of good restaurants and concert venues in that area.

Antone’s is a great place to hear music, and you don’t have to be 21 to get in. It’s not on 6th street, but close.

6th Street is overrated; the vast majority of UT students that frequent its establishments are underage fraternity/sorority members with either fake or borrowed IDs. Almost everyone else is an out-of-towner.

Barton Springs, Zilker Park, Kerbey Lane Cafe (the original location on Kerbey Lane), FoodHeads, Toy Joy, and Amy’s Ice Cream are all worth a visit.
