So I will be moving into a house that has a bed frame but no bed. I am not familiar with the best places to buy a bed in the Los Angeles area. Where do you think is the best place to order a cheap durable bed (full size)? Shipping to my place is also a priority since I do not have a car.

Costco is running a promotion on decent Serta matresses, $100 off. However, they are still not what a college student would normally consider cheap: mattress at Costco. You can knock another $100 off the online price at your local warehouse, so the bottom line price becomes $450, not cheap but a decent deal for this type of mattress. Their delivery charge is very steep, $100, so you are better off renting a truck from Home Depot for $20 for 75 mins and pick it up yourself.

If your budget is more in the $200 range or below, I would try the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or another thrift store. Or you may check one of the constant "sales" at Sleep Country, Mattress Factory, or a similar store, where they sell low-end mismatched sets for around $100/piece.

Just bought a bed at Sit N Sleep- free delivery. They have an online coupon for 10% off. We forgot the coupon but they gave it to us because we asked. Right now, price includes frame, pillows, and mattress pad. They will try to sell you an upgraded mattress pad but we talked them in to giving it to us for free because son's roommate bought it there too.

Reviving an old topic with the hope of better suggestions. I took a brief look at the Sit-N-Sleep prices and they don’t look that competitive. Are there places that sell “last year’s models”, mismatched sets, etc, at more attractive prices?

You may want to check in past classified ads in Daily Trojan on line at the end of the year. Someone may have been trying to sell their stuff before they leave USC. You need to watch for cheap used mattresses. Sometimes they are just recovered over the old dirty and bedbug infested mattress. They had a special about it on TV.
My son has a large blow up mattress that came with a pump to use temporarily. I think we got it at costco or bed bath and beyond.

Spoken like a true college kid, fully provided for by his/her parents. I guess you have never lived with limited means. Good for you, this is not something I wish to anybody, but it does have a character-building component to it.

I stayed in a dorm on the USC-mattresses when my student attended orientation and I can attest that yes, the mattresses are vinyl covered. They may, in fact, be SOLID vinyl. Possibly even linoleum, better suited for walking upon than sleeping. You could probably dip it in a vat of disinfectant and do no harm.

How unsettling! I looked around for some information about bedbugs and used mattresses. USC popped up on Google. Apparently, bedbugs are not unheard of at USC! Yikes!
