Hello, I am a junior at the end of her first semester. My grades aren’t what I hoped for this semester, I have a 3.67 gpa. My grades were an A in AP English, B(89%-she won’t round) in Chemistry, C in PreCalc, A in Japanese 3, a A in Ap Us history(89 .7 She wont Round), and a A (weighted) in AP Psychology. Besides Pre Calculas, the B’s I got this semester were a percent off from an A. I got a 4.0 and a 3.67 my sophomore year taking one AP Class and an Honors class. I decided to drop Pre Calc next semester because I know I will get a C again and I want to at the ery least save my gpa next semester. So I’m going to retake the class summer, but everyone is telling me not to because it will be harder, but do I really have a choice? If I continue to take it again next semester I know I will get a C and my gpa will look even worse. I feel like I can get a 4.3 gpa sec sem of junior year if Precalc isn’t there and I can focus on my other classes. So that would mean I would get an average 3.9 gpa over my sophomore and junior years. I am in Mock Trial, I volunteer at the Tri valley youth court, and I was secretary of the Japanese club, I haven’t taken the Sat yet. The problem is I want to major in Law, and I’m been wanting to become a lawyer for a very long time, I know its highly competitive and I know if Law is to be a successful path you will have to come from a reputable UC. I don’t want to attend the big UCs but not the small ones too. How should I approach the situation I am in? Would going to a community college and transfering to a reputable UC for Law be best. I wanted to attend Uc Davis, Uc San Deigo, or even NYU right after high school, but I think with this gpa I can’t. What is the best way for me to still achieve my major?
UC’s use 10-11th grades in the GPA calculation and you get up to 8 semesters of honors points toward your AP/IB/DE and UC approved Honors courses. Have you calculated your UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
If your calculated UC GPA is around 4.0+, you have a chance at UCD and UCSB but you will need solid ACT/SAT scores along with good EC’s and essays. GPA is definitely important but also making sure you get the right foundation in your math courses will allow to succeed in college. Retaking Pre-Calc during the summer will be at a faster pace, so if you think you can handle it, then you should try. To be competitive for the UC’s you want to have a rigorous course schedule and by taking AP Calc Senior year, this should help your chances.
Transferring from a CC to UC is also a very good option, if your HS stats are not good enough to get into your UC choice schools. I would wait until end of Junior year, take the SAT/ACT and see where you stand before making any decisions in regards to colleges.
Good Luck.
Thank you, if I were to somehow get a A in AP English next semester and if somehow the extra credit for Ap Us History get my grade to a 90% in the class I will have a 4.0 UC gpa, would that be way better or just better than a 3.9, meaning would it increase my chances dramatically or a little?
Of course, a higher GPA is always better but much will depend upon your application package, your intended major, HS course rigor, EC’s and essays. 6 of the 9 UC campuses average GPA is 4.0+, so if you are at a 3.9-4.0, you are within range. I highly doubt 0.1 will make a huge difference if you are a competitive applicant overall. Just do your best and that is all you can ask for, re-evaluate your college choices once you have some test scores to go with your GPA and apply to schools that fit your stats.
Unfortunately, I was unable to get my ap us history grade to a 90%, I ended up getting a 89.9%, I emailed my teacher but i remember her saying she won’t round. I’m really upset this drops my gpa from 3.8 to 3.67, so know I will have a total of 3.9 Uc gpa over my sophomore and junior year together. My teacher decides in the end right, there is nothing I can do or anyone can do to for her to raise it .1%?To think this .1, decreases my chances dramatically in succeeding
Do you know any particular UCs I can get into with 3.9? Or perhaps is it better to just go to a community college with this gpa and do very well there and transfer to a top uc like NYU(which i heard accepts a 3.7 highschool gpa avg? But has a good law school~~confused) or UCla(which has higher acceptance for transfers than HS students) rather than going to a second class UC, which may be harder to do well in and is more expensive?
