Best possible graduate school?? Average GPA? for Electrical Engineering

So here is my situation:
GPA: 3.8
Internships: GM, IBM and Intel.
graduating from UT Austin ECE.

what is my best option for grad school in EE? My ideal school would obviously be Stanford or MIT but I just don't know what their average GPA is or if they require research experience.
I have met several people that have applied to the wireless department in UT with a 3.9+ GPA and outstanding resumes and they don't get accepted. what the heck right?
Anybody knows from experience what stuff they look for in MIT, Berkeley, Standford?

Grad schools look for four things:

1) Letters of recommendation
2) Research experience
3) GPA
4) GRE

nice…how hard was it getting a 3.8 at UT ECE? were you able to go out and party/play sports and stuff?

A 3.8 won’t keep you out of any grad school. If you do well on the GRE and write some good essays I would say you are in reach of any grad program, just make sure you have defined your research interests and are able to communicate them effectively.

Thanks for the comments. My goal is definitely Standford so any help on the average GPA/GRE to get in would be great.
UT ECE is pretty hard I must say. From my class, only 23% of student have a GPA over 3.5. It is definitely doable though… selecting the right teachers definitely helps.
I party quite a lot believe it or not. The thing is that I tend to get extremely busy Sunda-Friday afternoon… and leave off time for Fri/Sat for social stuff.

I don’t know exactly what Stanford’s stats are, but for upper tier grad schools, expect the average GRE Quantitative score to be around 780-790. Verbal scores will vary drastically given the huge number of foreigners in engineering, and engineering schools generally don’t care as much about Verbal as they do about Quantitative, and to a much lesser extent, Writing, which is usually 5-ish.

3.7 is most lowest GPA, 3.8 being the average… Even though stanford is top 3, I’ve heard students in my school getting admitted with that gpa=3.7 and not so spectacular gpa’s. No financial aid though

you won’t believe how some top schools admit student with gpa well below 3.5, including stanford. that proves that gpa is not all that matters. in fact, from my personal experience, the admission rate for top schools is fairly high too. ~30% do you think all 30% of the applicants has gpa above 3.8? i dun think so. so it won’t kill you to have low gpa, you just need to get some other things to impress the adcom
