Best Premed/Combined/Accelerated Program??

The application deadline for UMKC's 6-year BS/MD program has come and gone (November 15, 2004).

However, if you a junior and are applying next year, those stats seem fairly average for the out-of-state applicant pool...you'd have a decent chance. If you were granted an interview you would most likely need to fly in.

flying in for interviews...i really hope i get interviewed at miami

collegefreak77, I am applying to the NIH internship. I was wondering if you had any pointers for me to get in to this program. What kinds of things are they looking for, etc. I would really like to participate in this program. Thanks for the help.

i got in through connections but from what i gathered from other interns, they're not like college admissions at all...they want the guy who has been completely dedicated to science, taking as many classes as possible and doing many related activities, especially research of some sort, winning science awards, and involved in health-related ec's (volunteer work at a hospital is a definite plus...a requirement almost, unless u have something else)...i'm not sure if they look at sat scores and such but the kids that were there and i talked to ranged from 1420-1540

i wish i could be of more help

good luck!

I'm a sophmore in high school (I know it's alittle early), I was looking for a little guidance on what ec's etc i need for competetive programs (Brown, Northwestern etc)
So far my GPa is 3.86 my school doesn't have weigthed GPA's
I haven't taken the SAT yet
My school doesn't rank us either bc of quaker philosophy, but it is one of the top schools in PA

EC's
Model UN
Varsity debate team
Varsity soccer
Varsity track- many awards
On the state team for soccer, and also play for one of the best teams in PA
School newspaper staff writer
A few latin and spanish awards
Have done research on obesity and diabetes for the past two summers at Upenn
Community service in school
play the trombone and a member of the chorus
one of 16 kids in US chosen to go to represent the US in the gothia cup(largest youth soccer tournament in the world)
i am going to attend a leadership conference on Medicine this summer

I take all honors classes and have been on the honor roll and high honor roll throughout high school so far

I know i'm missing leadership(i got 2nd in the elections for class president)

Thanks, umm, how competitive is the program as in how many apply do you suspect. And the only science related extra cirricular i have is volunteering at a hospital for 100 hours and I am currently working on a project for Intel Science fair. I have however, taken AP bio, chem, and physics and am taking AP chem, and AP Physics in my senior year. I have a 4.0/4.0 unweighted gpa. But I dont have any significant previous research. Is it possible for me to make this program and how competitive is it? What connections did you have that enabled you to get into it?

ur science dedication is very good...previous research is most likely not gonna be a factor since thats generally the point of this program

my connection was my dad knowing one of the professors there on a business level

I have no idea how strict the admissions are honestly, but it's definitely, definitely competitive. Hey, there's no harm in applying. I'm sure with your grades and i'm assuming a good SAT score, you should be on your way. I really wish I could be of more help!

Cash'd,

If you have amazing ECs with those stats you can get in anywhere. If you have little ECs you will get have a hard time getting into a BS/MD program. You should fly to interviews, even if from California. I have not yet come across a program that did not suppliment the SAT for the ACT. Hope that helps!

I have a question about GPA, my school just lists 4.0=A, 3.7=A-, 3.3= B+ etc, so when the colleges calculate your GPA do they include non academic classes such as band, theater and swimming? B/c if they do these lower my GPA alot (I can't swim at all)

AMoney...why not apply to the PSU/Jeff program ;) -- especially since you're from PA.

Best Accelerated Med Program- Northwestern

Best Accelrated Med Program (for saving time)- PSU/Jefferson

Best Accelerated Med Program (for saving money)- Rutgers/TCNJ

period.

Can non-NJ residents apply for Rutgers/TCNJ?

Here is a list of programs that are very well reputed and well established:

8-year programs: Brown, Rochester, CWRU
7-year programs: RPI/AMC, Northwestern, BU
6-year programs: PSU/Jefferson

These 7 medical programs without argument have produced outstanding physicians. None of the schools really matter, the quality of the students at every single one of these programs do well because they compete well and get the desired residencies. Although CWRU may be a more well reputed medical school than Jefferson, the Jefferson program students are competitive do well in medical school and get what they want. These students in general were all top in high school and know how to do well.

I am really looking into the accelerated pgms at psu-jefferson and drexel lehigh. do you think ill get in??
