Best Premed in UC

Which UC has the best Premed?

Ucla........

there is no such thing -- premed is not a major nor a program to take. Acceptance into med school depends on gpa, mcat, and EC's, in that order. A 3.9 from UCR will trump a 3.0 from UCLA (nearly) every time, all other things being equal.

btw: philosophy majors have one of the highest admittance to med school.

UCLA has the best pre-med, med, post-med, trans-med and uber-med.

I don't know about premed, but UCSD's med school is definitely world-renowned.

I think this has a lot to do with simple self-selection. Not too many philosophy students want to complete the premed sequence of courses, hence those few who do tend to be unusually motivated and exemplary. Contrast that with the biology major where students complete the premed sequence as part of their major and hence there's no 'extra' coursework they have to do to be premeds. Hence, the 'barriers to apply' are lower which means that lots of biology students who have relatively mediocre records apply to med-school anyway just to see what happens.

The best one is the one where you will do the best. For every simple question, there is a complex answer.

hey does brown univeristy have a regular program. i m not talking about the accelerated program or the honors program. Does brown have a good Pre-Medicine program. I wanna to do pre-medicine and major in biochemistry, I love biochemsity. Is it competive, will it prepare me for the MCAT's. I have heard tht Brown also a good medical skool.

Brown is a great all around school. Yes, Brown has a good pre-med program. Many schools will prepare you well for medical school. If you go to a weaker school and get a better GPA, do far more research than you would at a school with more competition, get far more attention from very similar professors, it might be better for you.

How is pre med at UCLA better than Berkeley, or UCSD, or Davis? Sure, the medschool is probably better (Berkeley lacks a true Berkeley medical school), but other than that, what advantage does UCLA have over the others? Heck, it might be better for someone to go to UCSC for medical school, often considered the weakest UC (with UCR, but the biomed program is quite strong, and leads to many premed people). So, if you go to UCSC, if you're trying hard, you will probably get more attention, some research, better recs, and less competition from fellow students.

i think UCSD is one of the best for premeds. UCSD was named "hottest for science" by Newsweek magazine. the premed atmosphere seems more relaxed as well, rather than intensely competitive, as compared to that of Berkeley and UCLA.

jay: any of the top ~100 colleges will prepare you well for med school; as Mr. B notes, the best place to go is where you will do well, i.e, high gpa and find some research or other EC opportunities (volunteer in free clinic). But, you'll need to narrow the list down to those that have a strong biochem dept.

flopsy:

don't forget that UCR has an automatic tie-in to UCLA's med school.....(top 10 students guaranteed admission). :)

Bluebayou, it's 20 selected students from the biomed program (who tend to be the top 20). I think it was changed from purely the top because of the intense compitition this caused. Things like slashing tires and kidnapping occured every once in a while . . . and the more usual ultra competitive stuff.

UCR is actually quite good. They even have that UCR-UCLA 7 year Med Program thing. Don't count UCR out.

Kidnapping, Drab?

What the heck is up with the UCR-UCLA Thomas Haider program anyways... why are we laying out the red carpet for UCR grads when we've got enough competition from Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA applicants?

DRab:

last time I read the website, it's now open to anyone at UCR to apply to the ~20 slots.

btw: read an article in today's LA Times -- UCR has petitioned the Regents for approval to build a med school using local hospitals.

UCR-UCLA program is great for those students who want to get into medical schools. Once in the program, you do your first two years in Riverside and you finish off your graduate school at LA w/a degree from LA. It's only for Riverside students...any major too. Plus, it does cut your chances by a lot with the competition with all the other students in the whole freakin world who are trying to get into medical schools...because again, only UCR students can apply for it.

I go to UCR and I thought it was something that was for me. But it isn't because I do not want to go for medical...more dentistry.

You're probably correct, bluebayou. As to swtnlazy, it's a great program, but perhaps not the best for all students who want to be premed. it seems to have more pressure than many other premed programs (which are known to be intense anyway). As to the med school at UCR, perhaps it will go through, perhaps not. it isn't the first time they've talked about it, but it might be the first time they formally petitioned.

well...if i take premed at UCLA or UCI then i cannot get into their med school since the UCs dont accept their own undergrads into grad school....i am soo confused. :(

Uh, who said that?
