Best PreMed Programs

So wat about New York University’s pre-med program?
Saaki,
Do u think that it will be difficult to score higher grades in NYU??or is it manageable?

NYU was fine for pre-med - I did reasonably well in science classes and even got to study abroad as a sophomore. That being said, I didn’t have a good experience with NYU’s pre-med advising, which caused me a hell of a lot of grief come application time. That being said, many of my classmates (apparently) had a much better time of it than I did. We got into a broad range of medical schools - everything from Drexel to Duke and Columbia.

What about Columbia, Berkeley (College of Chemistry), USC (Honors Science) as a pre-med? She is a smart kid, wait listed at Columbia, accepted and is re-visiting UCB, and accepted and loves USC. Medical schools do not report which school’s graduates are admitted and the AAMC has some data but not much. Does any one know if medical schools favor any of these schools over another?

I’d probably pick Columbia or USC over Berkeley, but honestly none of them will hold you back.

My daughter was accepted to NYU, University of Vermont-Honors College, University of Pittsburgh-Honors College, and University of Maryland. She’s thinking of medical school afterwards and I’m wondering which of these schools might be best for her. Also, she’s taking a gap year abroad next year and I don’t think Pitt defers (have to check on that!). She’s a math-science kind of kid, hard worker, and very self-motivated.

decision10,
"I am starting to think that he should just go where he would like to go, what makes most sense financially and stop stressing about it "

-Exactly. There will be plenty of stress in very near future, the decision about UG should not be the one to stress about. And if you are concerned with being academically challenged, plenty of challenges for the very top caliber at any UG, if the focus is acdemics and not partying. One of D’s classes even used the same textbook as her HS and still was one of her hardest classes in college, weed out killer. I would advise anybody who is planning to go to Med. School eventually, pick UG that fits best your personality and goals, work hard to get high GPA and you going to be just fine.

I am accepted by UCBerkely and Carleton College, if I want to go to a good medical school, which one should I pick now? any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

d accepted to both with merit aid from both but a 11-12 k difference per year to go to wpi
is it worth it? any comments on therse schools and getting into med school
thanks

Sakky, read a lot of your posts, really want to ask you or anyone who can help:

Suppose I make the same effort in college, UCBerkeley, NYU, Carleton College, which one brings me more chance to go to a good medical school?

I am struggling, please give me some suggestions, thanks a lot.

This is what matters more than the specific college.

Did anyone mention pre-med programme at northeastern university in boston? Is it any good? And from what I read they are affiliated with TUFTS and I wanted to know if that is a good medical school and if I get into premed at NEU would I automatically be accepted in TUFTS for medical school or is this too far a stretch?

Northeastern is not affiliated with Tufts. Tufts has an “early assurance” program that accepts students from several boston-area colleges in their sophomore year and guarantees them admission upon graduation. But this program is extremely competitive and not exclusive to northeastern.

There also is no “pre-med program”, just as most schools, there are a variety of science majors that will cover your pre-reqs, and there’s a pre-med advisor, but it’s not an official program that you apply to.

Emily2007- oooh thanks for clearing that up!! it is really good to know about this info.
Also, schools do in fact offer pre-med major, I only know this because my cousin is actually doing a pre-med major in the US and I researched many universities to know what majors they offer and stuff, and some have ‘pre-med’, such as northeastern and a few others. But I do also know that some people prefer doing biology major or other science related major that cover the pre-reqs needed to apply for med school.

I still don’t know though which programme would be the best for pre-med, I think it might just depend on one’s ability lol I am not capable at the moment of achieving off the notch scores but I still think that I can push myself to succeed in medical school

sakky, hope you are still around.
i have just signed up here and am researching possibilities for my daughter. we are in India, US citizens and i am trying to figure out how to narrow down colleges.
all your posts have been valuable.
sitting here, how do i know which college is right for her??

thanks, a

woodlands, your description of your daughter was eeriely like mine.
we are just beginning the process. would you be able to share your experiences.
we will be applying from bangalore india and will be taking the SAT in oct.
we do not have much time and have tons of info to wade through.
how do we narrow down our college?
grade inflation?
ivies?
what did you look for?
look forward to your reply.

thanks, a

apply2school,

Welcome to CC! I checked woodlands and they only made the one post that you read and that was back in April. I doubt that they are still active, but you could give them a try by using the Private Message function: click on their name and then ‘Send Private Message’. sakky is still active, and if you want to ask them a question directly, you could again use the PM function.

The sticky thread, Good PreMed Schools provides excellent information about how to select an UG college.

You might want to start a new thread giving some information about our daughter and asking for suggestions. However, without SAT scores, it would be more difficult to suggest schools. Your financial situation will also be important as many schools do not provide financial aid to Intl. students.

One college I was thinking about was Colgate, do any of you think that would be a good college for a pre-med student?

Entomom, I stumbled on your reply today !! in the early days that i posted I did not use the subscribe feature - did not know about it!!! so of course i prompted and then never found it.
since then i have grown more adept at using CC :)

A lot has transpired since that post - we are looking at about 20 colleges very closely and i am trying to pare that list down.
I will answer some of your questions here:
D is in the 12 grade (as i mentioned before)
11th grade was a bit tricky because the school adopts grade deflation.
they will note that in the recommendation letters. have me the principal in this regard.
right through has been an A+ student.
Taking the SAT in october - currently in the middle of mid terms.
subject tests in nov.
we were too late in this process and ran out of time for prep courses. I am coaching her myself.
the one timed test she took, after less than 1 month sporadic prep is thus-
CR - 710, M-730, writing 600

we will be definitely looking at the need blind schools closely. Our wages in India put us below “poverty line”!!!

we are US citizens - half her schooling has been in the US - will not be applying as international students.
anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

thanks, a

not sure if should hit reply or begin a new thread.
BTW, have seen you on the SAT forums as well and this has been a huge resource for me in my SAT tutoring :):)

apply2school:

suggest you post your request on the parents forum.

Also consider the ACT. For an internationally-educated student, I would guess that Subject Test scores can be extremely important.

Thank you!
will post on the parents forum.

Oh dear - we have not looked at the ACT at all!!
is it too late to begin now??

with SAT on Oct 9th, SAT II Nov - do i have time for ACT?

thanks, a
