Best prep book for US History?

What's the best prep book for SAT II US History?

Other threads on this board have claimed it is Spark Notes!

Barron's led me to an 800 in December. It's depth really overprepares for the test.

kaplan if you have the time to go through the whole book. sparknotes for a less in depth review. the practice tests in sparknotes are way easier than they should be.

What about Kaplan's practice tests? Are they accurate?

i'd say so.

so what does everyone else think of sparknotes for US History?

I'm only halfway through a good college-level US history course. Does Kaplan have enough history past 1865 to get an 800 on the exam?

Barron's hands down- plus it has lots of practice tests (i think around seven)

but isnt it ridiculously detailed? i saw some bad reviews on amazon.com

well yeah the ap and satII tests are ridiculously detailed themselves---aren't they???- us history when tested in hs is for some reason more detailed oriented than trend and analysis oriented-----there is something really weird about the barron's book though -----it gets more deatailed as the history gets more recent (clinton era has about 10 pages dedicated to it)---which makes no sense at all----i just didn't read from bush I on up---also i don't really like how barron's is broken up by president- plus they give WAY TOO MUCH information about each freaken election election---go with barron's though they make the review interesting and it helped me catch some things about US history that I didn't even catch when reading my perversely detailed APUSH book, though remember when taking their practice tests that they're alot harder than the real thing--i could only score above a 650 and in reality i did alot better than that

im using REA because everyone that did well last year used it.
im also reading "Don't Know Much About History" by Kenith Davis
because i dont fall asleep when i read it.

they actually have a "SAT II US History for Dummies" book, believe it or not.

I do believe. Saw this book on amazon.com. Lol.

I think the best for U.S. History is SparkNotes.

yes i think i might use sparknotes as a summary but ill definately read beyond it. Some of the questions are easy as all the other multiple choie options apart from the answer are stupid. I assume this wont happen on the real SAT.

I ordered the "SAT II US History for Dummies" =) It better be good !! I am an international student so I am not going to be able to do AP History and that...(totally self-studying). I'm just hoping that these practise tests will be good preparation... does anyone recommend any other books? (Ones I might be able to borrow from the library?)

Wow, you're an international student taking the SAT II for US Histroy? I give you mad props for that. I'm not sure if a book can fully prepare you for the exam, but I wish you the best of luck.

Um yeah that might be hard. World History is probably incredibly hard too since your curriculum prolly focuses on different topics/areas than ours.

I too am an international and will take SAT II U.S. History.

I think American History is very easy to self-study.

yeh i think it would be very hard but i have no other options basically. I've been looking through sparknotes and i think ive learnt a lot of the 20th Century US hist in my IB course for Cold War already, it's just the pre 1900's bit that im really confused about...all the civil war and independence bit. Btw, is there a lot on the SATII on the civil war (like specific battles and generals etc)? On sparknotes every topic is gone through very concisely so I dont really know...

I think SAT II U.S. History tests more about historical analysis rather than plain memorization of those details. And if you know the stuff contextually, you can guess those little details out.
