You probably saw these posts for numerous times, but I would like to ask again because most posts only have recommendations for English and math.

By taking the real act prep guide tests, I got 26 on english and reading, and 36 on math and science.

Therefore, please give any recommendations of prep books for english and reading. If I have to buy two (like one for english and one for reading), I am ok with that.

I want to buy ones with the level similar to the real ACT, since I don't want to get confused on questions that won't appear on the real test.

Also, I would like to say my grammar is pretty good (710 writing on SAT), but my reading is just ok.

Thanks.

For the English section, use Barron’s ACT 36. I found the English section to be very helpful and on the practice test at the end, I only got five questions wrong. A free resource is SparkNotes ACT Book online, which I found to be very helpful as well.

Reading on the ACT, I believe, comes down to practice and reading speed. The only way you can increase your reading speed is to read a lot and read the ACT passages a lot. Some people don’t read the whole passage when they take the ACT, and I made this mistake when I took the ACT. I didn’t read the whole passage, I just looked at the questions to determine where I needed to look for answers in the passage. This method didn’t work well. I would recommend reading the whole passage in about three minutes and then answering the questions so that you get a solid understanding of the passage.

A simple guide that can help a lot is Jeandevaches’ Guide to the ACT (Just search the forum for it). For more ACT practice tests, search this forum and you will find threads with links to practice tests. Good luck in improving your ACT English and Reading scores!

^Barron’s ACT 36 also has a Reading section that could help you a lot. Other than that, I don’t have too many tips for Reading. SparkNotes ACT Book online has a thorough breakdown of the Reading section of the ACT, so you may want to check that out also.

Thanks for the reply, efirestone14.

Then, is there any prep books that have a lot of reading passages to practice for?
I don’t need any tips then, just practice.

I try to avoid online resources because I usually wander off to other websites. lol

Do you have the red book?

And also there are booklets of periods like 2008-2009//2009-2010 but some of their content are same so dont print’em all :)

^
Yep, I got the red book, and that’s where I got the 26’s and 36’s.

Just wondering, are the Princeton ACT 2012 and the 1296 questions any good for the English and reading part? I’m going to buy Barron’s ACT 36 tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply.
