Best profs for econ 001 and math 104?

what are your suggestions for professors this fall?

stein deturk kthnxbai

i think spiegel is fine too. Hard to understand, but decent otherwise.

Stein is who you want for Econ 001.

For Math 104, they're all the same. They basically rewrite the book's examples on the board and call it a day.

I had Leidy for 104 and had a very enjoyable experience with her.

Stein for econ.
Avoid Pantev for math.

What about Vanerp for Math 104? Penn Professor Review ranked him/her pretty high, but that wasn't for 104.

what's wrong with pantev???
**** I got that mofo for math 240 next sem

Try counting how many times he directly addresses the class. Funnier though is time how long he stares at his feet during a single lecture. Odds are it will be greater than 50%.

In general though, he doesn't explain stuff well/at all. Be prepared teach yourself out of the book (what I did) or go to office hours. He's a nice guy and all, just not a great prof.

should i go into a different section (there's one at like 9 am. . . )?
any idea on how Shatz is? He's not on course review

Definitely get Ward for 104... he's very fun to listen to -- makes for an entertaining class. He's also good with his explanations. As for Econ, go Stein.

If anyone knows anything about Shatz for 240, that would be awesome. A Google search reveals he got his PhD at Harvard, but you're right in that he's not on course review.

As for my recommended profs, go Stein and DeTurck.

He's known for holding classes during vacations, holidays, and the like. Worst of all, he has assignments due on those days to make sure students attend. Supposedly, a good chunk of one of his classes returned early from spring break last year to attend class.

Shatz? Damnit.

How is that allowed? Seriously...

For econ, it simply says staff under the professor area. Is there any way to find out the actual professor for each given section.

How is it allowed? Easy. He's tenured. Not only is he tenured, he's emeritus. More or less, the guy is retired.

The university will not fire a tenured retired professor. He's knows it and takes full advantage of it.

after all this work, do the students learn a lot in his classes and is he a good teacher?

Couldn't tell you. I've never had him. Truthfully, if I were in your position, I'd take Pantev's class. He's a really nice guy, just a bit "math professor"-ish. Plus, if you find a 2-3 other kids to study/do homework with, you'll be fine.

Jayant "104" Lal for life mofos
