best public relations/advertising bachelor programs

I'm set on pursuing PR/advertising. Does anyone know which schools have the best program in this field? So far, all I know of are BU, American, Emerson, UM, USC. Any more colleges with great PR/advertising programs would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and I'm also looking for colleges in major cities where I can get plenty of opportunities for internships and the like.

Yeah being in a major city is helpful for future reference… well considering your perference you should also look into:
George Washington University
University of Minnesota- Minneapolis ( is that what UM is or is that UMich or Maryland?)

Looks like you’ve picked out a good list I would have suggested speaking of large cities.

I could suggest other universities but not sure how well you could measure the cost as being a out of state student and/ or not sure if you would be a at least a good match ( mainly speaking about the Ivy Leagues and alike).

I’m going to be a transfer student. Planning on transferring spring 2011. Currently a freshman in college.
I had horrible hs stats (2.8 GPA, 1030/1560) but will make up for it with college. I went to the University of Tampa (which is a pretty good school for those hs stats), but the coursework here is so easy and I have a new found love and motivation for studying. I haven’t felt this motivated to do well academically since I was back in middle school, and I really want to make sure that my future will be good. I think this will be easier if I go to a more reputable school (especially since my school isn’t know for advertising/PR). Also note that i am an international student.

first semester GPA of college - 3.7 with 13 credits
I’m going to work to keep my GPA up and will also take summer courses after next semester to give colleges more reason to accept me. I guess I should join some clubs or something… not really sure what I could be interested in… i’ll research that I guess. Anyways, regardless, with a 3.7 in a decentish college I think my chances of transferring into a very reputable school are good (probably not the ivy leagues obviously, but other than that I think I’ll have a shot at pretty much any school).

Right now I’m just researching colleges. Costs are a non-issue as my parents are paying and have guaranteed to pay for my undergrad years at least. The only issue is location, I want my college to be in a big city or within a 45 minute drive to a big city because (in no order)

 1. I am a big city guy.
 2. I am independent and cosmopolitan.
 3. I don’t care about school spirit.
 4. big cities will offer A LOT more internship opportunities for an advertising/PR major.

The problem with GWU is it doesn’t offer an advertising/PR major, and I don’t really see the point of applying since I don’t really want to take journalism and I don’t know of any other majors that are similar to advertising/PR.

So far my list looks like this: Emerson, American, BU, UM (miami), Hofstra. But I want more options before I begin to minimize my list and start applying… Also tbh, I’m not sure which school out of those has the best advertising/PR program so if there’s any info on that, it’d be helpful.

Definitely check out Syracuse University’s Newhouse School. There’s a very strong PR/Advertising program there.

Im a person who likes big city and nature. I also know the larger cities will have more opportunities with internships, events etc… I do like school spirit though. I definately would second University of Minnesota- " Minneapolis", double check George Washington University. Your a transfer student, being a resident of Florida its a good ideal to consider University of Miami. I’m not sure what city New College of Florida is in but its a school popular for your interest also. I would have suggested Syracuse and other collges but you seem to stress the importance of being in a large city and not sure of yoru financial situation.

my parents are wealthy and paying for college

Oh okay, well also look into
University of Minnesota- Minneapolis
George Washington University
University of Washington- Seattle,
UC- San Diego,
Ohio State University- Columbus,
Not sure about UMaryland or University of Pittsburgh

Syracuse is probably the best for communications. Check them out:
[Welcome to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications](http://newhouse.syr.edu/)

Coolbrezze - I havent heard much about UC- San Diego. I’m actually applying there, but is it really that strong in their comm (PR) department? I always though their program was very theory based.

In addition to Syracuse, which is very strong, UMiami has a good program

My daughter has similar interests and decided instead of thinking in terms of what school she wanted to be in a city that was a hotbed of opportunity for PR, advertising, etc. She decided after visiting not to apply to NYU (we are from CA) and concentrate on schools in LA. She applied for the Annenburg School of Communication at USC (with a 4.3 GPA, fantastic ec’s and recs) and didn’t get in. They only take 160 freshmen into that program. You might have better luck as a transfer. She got into some other LA schools but ultimately choose UCLA. She just applied for their communications major (you have to be a sophomore at UCLA to apply and was admitted.

What she is finding (and what she hoped for when she was looking at schools) is that being in LA is the most impt. thing. She is a member of a networking group on campus and has gotten tons of help and pointers about applying for internships. She sent out about 30 resumes to see about spring quarter/summer internships and has already gone to 2 interviews and has more set up. One is with a film production co. and the other was with a PR firm. She could have gone to many other schools with her gpa and stats but decided that being in LA (or NY) was more impt. She does love UCLA though. It is not an easy school and you really have to be motivated as there is no handholding. She has great classes, friends and though she doesn’t necessarily want to live in LA later she is finding that for her career interests it is crucial to be there.

If you want to stay on the east coast then consider concentrating in NY city schools or if you want to come west LA schools.

agree with inquiring mind; except for one thing…even though Syracuse is not right in NYC, all of their alumni and recruiting is concentrated there…and since she wanted to be on the east coast, my daughter turned down Annenberg acceptance but IM is correct; that and UCLA win it on the west coast.

At Newhouse if you have any q’s…
