Best residence hall?

Does anyone know what Rubin is like?

Wait, RD students get preference too? Is this on a first come first serve basis based on who turns in the SIR first?

I've asked the housing office this question multiple times and have gotten varying responses. When I call them, they tell me that the date doesn't make a difference because the applications are processed in June. However, when I e-mail them, they tell me that they are processed when they are received (which could actually be unfair to ED people).

I thought ED kids get to pick specific dorms and RD kids get to specify either traditional housing or apt. style housing (not specific dorms). Am I wrong? Hmm. I have a kid who got in RD and that was both of our understanding. However, she is going to room with a friend who got in ED so she gets the "advantages" of the ED specific dorm preferences. Anyway, just curious now because the posts above contradict my understanding.

when i went to the admitted students reception in my area, they anounced to us that RD students get to list first choice dorms to last choice....so yes, RD people do get a preference. you just arent gauranteed your top choice or anything

Neither are ED students.

my roommate goes to nyu and lived in 3rd north last year. she really didn't like it-- she had no privacy, not enough room, and the security guards let in a homeless man who ended up sexual harrassing her roommate and stealing a lot of stuff.

a good friend of my lived in hayden last year and i stayed with him there for a few days. it was old but nice. really nice location, right at washington square park.

i don't know if you can live at water street as a freshman, but he lived there this year as a soph. and i really really liked it. lots of space and an amazine view, although the location sucks (it's down near wall st., nothing around really and not a very good neighborhood).

Anyone have any experience with the lack of a dining hall at Brittany? Curious as to how easy it is to get food on a regular basis. Do people just time meals when they are on the way to or from the residence?

i'm going to turn in my deposit this week. does that mean i will have sad chances with dorm choice? :-( :-(

Third North has some of the largest rooms for Freshmen so if she didn't have enough room then she probably wouldn't have liked any of the dorms. As to secuirty letting in a homeless man, if you go to NYU you would know that that is absolutely impossible. They won't even let in NYU students who forget their id's

It's actually true... there was an article about it on washington square news. (nyunews.com)

Wow, that security guard is an incompetant moron that I hope got fired.

I've been signed into NYU dorms before, the and they seem very secure regarding the signing in of non-NYUers; you really can't get in without an ID it seems to me. I think the homeless man thing is a very rare occurance due to the stupidity of one doorman who shoudn't have been hired to begin with.

UHHH I LIVE IN THIRD NORTH AND IT IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD.

i know it sounds over the top because im still a freshman and there aren't many experiences to compare it to...but it's awful. I would never recommend 3N to anyone...not even the worst person alive.

In the past 2 weeks, they've caught 5 mice in my dorm.

And askaboutnyu, yes third north has some of the largest dorms but im also inclined to believe they have some of the SMALLEST. It;s completely hit or miss. If you do themed housing, you'll get a large ex. sorrority floor which might be worth it...BUT i didnt and my dorm had bunk beds and could barely fit two desks.

and there's always these fur balls that you can never get rid of...and these really weird stains all over the floor.

and as for the whole "oh i geta kitchen and a common room" thing...your kitchen is disgusting and only creates a larger mess for you to clean.
and since you have a common room, it's a 'fire hazard' to leave your door open so everyone is pretty much to themselves and unfriendly.

In fact, im transferring.

good luck. Pick Brittany or Hayden. or if you really want apt. style get UHALL. that would be awesome, but the prospect of getting stuck in third north instead should scare you away.

oh right, and the security IS awful. In the front entrance, there are hand scans which are good for letting in residents...but on friday/sat nights the entire lobby is packed and people have snuck in with ease before.

in the back entrance, all you have to do is wave a photo id and the guards dont possibly have enough time to scrutinize all of them, plus they're lazy. I've gotten my non nyu friends in by borrowing other people's ids. its pretty bad.

okay. sorry about the rant, but i wanted to tell it like it is.

There are mice everywhere. Lafayette and Broome have mice. All dorms on the lower floors do. Also where is there a Sorority floor in 3N. I thought greek housing was in Lafaeytte? Brittany is smaller, and has more mice than 3N, and has no AC. Hayden is awesome though. Your definitely in the majority that doesn't like 3N. The fact that your transferring obviously makes you kind of biased to.

is the mice problem really bad? how about insects? I really want to live in either hayden or goddard next year...and i'm deathly afraid of pests =(

i can honestly say that I never had a problem with rodents of any kind. The general rule is the higher up you are the less you have to worry about. The problem with goddard is mice are attracted to the Starbucks right on the corner. Rumor is that the lower floors have kind of a problem. Don't worry about it though. You most likely will never see a mouse and if you do just tell NYU safety.

true, NYC has mice...but 5 mice caught (who knows how many are running around) in the past 2 weeks is pretty bad.

and if they are everywhere, then you are likely to run into the problem at NYU...but definitely stay away from 3N regardless.

sorrority floors are 7-14 in the East tower. As i said, they are the ex sorrority floors- Greek did get moved to Lafayette this year. But sorrority floors have 6-8 bedrooms, a huge kitchen and huge common room that everyone shares. it's actually alot nicer in my opinion.

ive never had a problem with insects.

and basically, im transferring because i had such a negative dorming experience. So...i guess i am biased but i honestly gave it a shot first semester.

can you keep the mice as pets, since they are there already?

Palladium or U-Hall. Or Water Street, gorgeous but really far away (by bus)

o yay! it's awesome that rd kids get to pick now too (but only b/c I am an rd kid). btw, do a lot of people end up not getting their top few choices (like top 3)? do some people end up getting last choice?

I just got acess to my housing form online and it doesn't give goddard as one of the 7 choices to rank. Why is this? Not that I want goddard because I have heard so many bad things about it. Also, I can people talk about what they have heard about rubin and brittany. I don't hear them talked about much.
