Hi Folks..I'm new to this forum and looking to find out what is the best scholarships Duquesne offers ? Does anyone know if they offer full rides ? If so, does anyone know the SAT/ACT requirements for the full ride ? If not, what is the highest scholarship they offer please ? Any help greatly appreciated.

You should contact admissions and ask what scholarships would be available based on your academic record.

hi Marybee333…I did contact admissions and gave them all my daughter’s very high SAT scores, etc. They gave vague answers about getting a very good scholarship, but nothing concrete. I was just wondering if anyone out there knew of a Duquesne applicant that was ever offered a full ride ? I’m not sure if full rides are possible at Duquesne and would like to know as their tuition is otherwise out of reach.

Apply early and see what they offer. They have X amount of university academic scholarship dollars and X amount of applicants. I do not think they give a full ride for academics, but I am sure you are applying to other schools and you can compare the bottom line for each.

D. received on Monday (letter dated October 23) acceptance with two Merit Scholarships.

The Duquesne University Academic Sholarship for $11,500 and the Laval Scholarship for $8,000. I am not certain but I looked them up and those are generous from what I could ascertain.

D. visited Duquesne in March, had an interview with Admissions and an interview with the Nursing Admissions person who also gave us a tour. Pitt and Case Western bowled her over but she did like the feel of Duquesne and loved her general tour guide, a very ebullient young woman. They gave us a lunch pass; the cafeteria food was lousy…lol… In the chapel we walked by there were a surprising number of students attending(it was Lent…and we are Catholic).

Thanks for the great info. My daughter sent in her application last week. I’m surprised/impressed your D already was admitted and given her scholarship $$$ ! Congrats to the both of you. I wonder how long it took for your application entry to the acceptance and scholarship ? Weeks or months ? Thanks for the info and good luck !

Hi TJ

D. applied to Duquesne in August–around the 21st as I recall. They sent her two emails in September and then the letter arrived Monday, October 28–note a regular white thick envelope large enough to contain a bumper sticker but not a ginormous fanfare manila production…lol We did Duquesne first as the Admissions officer stressed getting your app in early (free). GL to u as well. D. was accepted into Pitt Nursing in September so we have to see what --if any money they’ll give her…

TJBills - I sent you a PM. Check your inbox

TJ

I forgot to mention this–was thinking about it at D’'s volleyball game this evening–in the paper work the school sent it explicitly states that “Duquesne Scholarship funds are used to defray TUITION costs only” Important information to know as many schools allow the funds to go toward Tuition, room and board.

Washdc mom - can you provide what academic criteria led to the scholarship amounts? ACT or SAT score? GPA?

thanks

Hi,

1980 SAT 650 680 650
3.65 weighted AP and Honors (3.48-5 unweighted), rigorous private school where average SAT is 1960 and 25% go to Ivies. Relevant course work–AP Psych, Physiology, AP BIO, Chem, Calculus, 4 years Spanish… School does not rank.

Those are her basic stats; I am not well versed on how Duquesne makes decisions though I do have some Admissions background.

These other issues were probably key:

Lots of face time, (we are OOS obviously) interviewed with Admissions rep and rep of the Nursing program back in March (NOTE: she talked about trying to “raise the bar” of the applicants, attracting higher SAT kids and moving to the DREXEL model where students have to pass a test before taking the NYCLEX)

Applied in August

Classical violinist since age 6 and plays in two orchestras and one jazz band

It’s Academic NBC TV Team (3 person–she is the only girl), (It’s like Quiz bowl but 55 years of airing on NBC local)

Active Catholic–first female altar server at our DC Catholic church and currently a monthly lector

Hundreds of volunteer service hours

Work as Camp Counselor Sophomore and Junior summers and Winter/Xmas breaks

Georgetown Hospital Volunteering

Two sports for four 4 years–Volleyball and Softball

Wrote an essay on being diagnosed at age 12 with Type I diabetes

As you probably know the SAT average for Duquesne runs about 550-580 per section. US direct entry nursing schools DESPITE being “competitive” --this is due in large part to the small numbers of seats available 85-120 usually— often record lower SATs then say campus Math, Business, Engineering or Science programs.

wow she is an impressive young woman!

Were the math and verbal the two first sections, 650 and 680?

Is she going to go to Duquesne?

We are waiting to hear back on application and anxious about the money.

You know we don’t know yet. She has applied to 12 schools–for nursing, 11 Direct, 1 2-2 (Minnesota). These include Pitt, UVA and Case Western. She was accepted into Pitt last month (her brother is a pre-med, neuro major there graduating in May 2014. I would say we were pleasantly surprised by Duquesne and the administration reps were great. Pitt and Case obviously have the advantage of the incredible ties to world class hospitals and health facilities. We’ll see how it unfolds. She is quite bright and very kind, a sort of renaissance child.

sorry…Math was 650 …CR 680 and writing 650 (1980). She is actually retaking next Saturday. She only took it once.

washdcmom did you have to fill out separate paperwork for the Laval scholarship? Did that scholarship also come in the same letter as the Duquesne Academic scholarship? did it say what the qualifications were for the Laval?

washdcmom - also is your daughter a minority? does the laval only apply to minority students?

Hi Domer

No, we did not submit separate paperwork for merit consideration or any financial documents, but we did send attachments to her application including a “resume” of her extracurricular activities, work experience and honors, and I believe we also sent her essay that she wrote for CA. This occurred in August so I am going by memory. Duquesne was alot like Pittsburgh–very little effort required to apply–but S. chose to see both campuses and send more information—hoping to somewhat distinguish her application.

The letter arrived with her acceptance and within the body, the designation of the Duquesne Academic Award and the Laval. There was no description of either. As you have probably noticed Duquesne does not have a great deal of information on its site. But google Duquesne and scholarships. You will find more info though the figures are all a bit dated. They offer apparently several merit awards including several for Catholic high school graduates --PA and elsewhere-- and what looks like a 10% tuition discount to Catholic HS grads—which D. is not. Her second award–the Laval --appears to be slated for minority students, but I am gathering that from reading outside scholarship sites–not the University’s.

Good luck to you. D’s first choices are Pitt and Case but we will see how it shakes out. The good news is she says she could see herself at any of the schools she has applied to, which is exactly what we are glad to hear!
