Hi, the May 1 deadline is coming and I am trying to weigh pros and cons for which school to choose. I know UCSB has a great communications program, and Chapman a decent one. I am looking for relatively smaller class sizes. cal Poly SLO is a great school too, but it seems STEM focused and I am worried about getting the classes I need. Can anyone speak on the ease of obtaining classes at cal poly SLO and if it would be easy to graduate in four years? I haven’t heard much about its communications program on these forums for some reason, as it is not really a liberal arts school. Narrowing it down to chapman, UCSB, and SLO, which would be the best for a comm major? Thanks.
Not to dissuade you in your choice of major, but it can be a tough job market for communications majors, so it’s not a bad idea to plan on earning a grad degree at some point to further your employability. That said, UCSB’s highly rated program/faculty will be an advantage to you if you want to pursue grad studies at some point. Also, cost savings in undergrad is an issue for grad studies, as is 4-year grad rate, and UCSB probably wins there. SLO’s 4-year grad rate is poor at something like 37%, but in fairness, it’s more of a tech/math heavy school so there’s going to be more attrition.
UCSB will have the largest class sizes in your first couple of years, but they will likely be comparable to the other schools in years 3-4, at least to the point where discussion/learning quality is on par. For UCSB social fit, it’s a large school so almost everyone can find their niche.
I’d go with either UCSB or Chapman.
What’s your net cost if you count (tuition, fees, r&B) - (scholarships/grants)?
DO NOT deduct any loan and indicate your cost for each university so we can advise you more efficiently.
I’ve eliminated chapman because of its price which would be over 30k. Here are my net costs:
UCSB: 20800
SLO: 19200
Point Loma nazarene: 25238

Trying to figure out whether summer classes would transfer to SLO to ensure I can finish in four years
So, what was your May 1st decision? THanks!
Ucsb! Waiting on ucsd waitlist still
UCSB is a FANTASTIC choice! Congratulations!
