Best school for me?

Hi College Confidential!

I am interested in studying business, economics and sociology as an undergraduate and am investigating which schools would be best for me. I have already selected a few schools I'm aiming for, but need to narrow down my pool of choices.

The schools in question are Penn (CAS), McGill, UT Austin, UNC Chapel Hill, UBC, Georgetown, Wisconsin-Madison and UVA.

What do you experts think? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you a Canadian?

If so, will your family pay the high non-resident costs at UVA, UWisconsin, UNC and UTexas? If not, then take them off your list.

If your parents will pay full cost for any school, then great. If not, then how much will they pay?

No, and I don’t think tuition fees should be an issue, at least not at this stage. Right now I just want to determine which schools would be best for my interests, not taking costs into account. Thanks for your reply!

I don’t think tuition fees should be an issue

Actually, your financial situation is a major issue. There are thousands of colleges out there. If your parents won’t pay $55k per year for them, then you could be spinning your wheels coming up with a school list that includes no affordable schools.

So, yes, it really does need to be an issue at this point.

If you’re a senior, it is well into the app season…you need to take affordability into acct.

You are making a valid point, thank you for sharing it. I am lucky to be able to say that the economic situation should not prove a deciding factor, due to sufficient funds being available for my education. What I am trying to do is to get a better feel for these schools without taking the financial bit into the consideration.

I appreciate your help. Do you have any tips about the schools?

These are all great schools and fairly selective as well. Why would you want to make your list smaller?

In the end I can only attend one school, so having a clearer idea how to arrange my preferences would certainly help in a time when admission decisions are known. In this case I am interested in the schools’ respective qualities in principally the fields of business, economics and sociology for undergraduate studies, though any other information is welcome too!

Thank you.

your list has a nice ‘range’ of selectivity. Of course it’s impossible for anyone to even guess at what works best for you without seeing your stats.

Just a couple of general observations – if your grades, SAT, etc. is competitive, most would think that Penn (Wharton) is a better fit for business/finance. This being said, Penn is one of those schools that has an extremely low acceptance rate (close to 10%?) and Wharton probably even more so.

Otherwise, my advice in general is that your decision hould be based on “fit” " overall school reputation" and “business school reputation” in that order.

zephyr15,

Thanks for your advice. Do you have any idea of how strong the other schools are in regards to business, economics and/or sociology? Wharton is optimal for business, however if I would be able to study at Penn it would be at the CAS rather than Wharton. Logically Penn would be considered academically superior to the others, but at this time I do not have a good feel of how strong that lead is and in what order they would follow with respect to the subjects I am interested in. Any ideas?
