Can anyone offer any insight on what they have heard or experienced about and with different schools that offer a Bachelors Degree and higher in Music Therapy? Eventually, I'd like to persue a doctorate in the study. I'm still at community college right now but went to see a career counselor and academic advisor today and they suggest that I make my top three choices of Schools now. If anyone has heard anything, I'd really appreciate the extra information especially if it is based on personal experience.

Thank you!

It’s great to hear that you’re planning to study music therapy and are hoping to do advanced study in music therapy. Music therapy is such a rewarding profession. My best advice to you right now would be to look at undergraduate schools you are interested in with the following things in mind: (a) how much pre-internship clinical experience will you have? (b) how many classes will you take with the music therapy professors? (c) what is the focus/philosophy of the music therapy program? (d) what is the clinical experience and research/publication history of the music therapy professors?
Once you have a solid foundation with your undergraduate degree in music therapy, you can look to specialize in music therapy with your graduate degrees.

Each AMTA-Approved Music Therapy School ([Welcome to the American Music Therapy Association Website](http://www.musictherapy.org)) will have a slightly different philosophy of music therapy and the faculty members will have different clinical experience. It’s worth taking some time to investigate each program to find the “right fit”. I teach in the Slippery Rock University Music Therapy Program, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about our program: [Our Music Therapy Program](http://www.sru.edu/academics/colleges/chfpa/music/Pages/OurProgram.aspx).

Best of luck with your search!

Another school to look at is Nazareth College, outside of Rochester, NY. They have a very well respected program and some excellent faculty for this major, plus the advantage of a self-contained teaching facility. Good luck!
