Best School in Texas

drax, I wish that were true, but Harvard, Yale, and Stanford grads are considered very attractive everywhere, including in Texas.

I’m just figuring cost and availability. UT Law grads highly available, HLS, YLS, SLS, maybe not so much -> UT Law moves to the head of the pack for Tx firms. All written in the context of my original post.

Would HLS, … , grads, prefer NYC, Boston, Chicago, LA, Palo Alto over Houston/Dallas? Probably, especially for the $$$. So it might be hard (or harder) to attract some of these elite grads to your area. Correct me if I’m wrong.

You have to read some of the prior posts to get the gist of why UT Law was included, no just jump in and start spouting. Read before you leap… ; )

Not at al by a fat margin!

Is there a single program in an UG and graduate program at Berkeley that is better than at Stanford? No? How many students who are both accepted at Cal AND at Stanford end up attending Berkeley? Almost none. Yes, almost none. How may transfers does Stanford accept? How many does Cal accept as a matter of routine.

When accounting for such differences between Stanford and Berkeley, you cannot compare Rice and UT. Not only are there are plenty of students who attend one of the selective UT departments who were accepted at Rice, but several programs at UT are better than at Rice.

Maybe not “better” but there are dozens that are as good.
Biosciences, chemistry, comp sci, geosciences, math, econ, English, history, psychology, poli sci, sociology (clearly better), and probably some foreign languages and other more narrow areas. UCB also offers dozens of majors not available at Stanford.

Cal offers BuAd, architecture. Stanford’s qb majors in something in architecture and design, but I don’t think it’s pure arch.

I know some students who got accepted to Stanford and went to Berkeley because of the cost difference.

Or it’s like saying UNC is better than Duke. Of course some may argue that UNC is better than Duke. :)

Rice is good if you want to be a doctor. UT is the place if you want to be an engineer or go into business. I hate to use rankings, but since some of you are so fixated upon USNWR:

For UNDERGRADUATE engineering (from USNWR):

UT:

4–Civil Engineering

5–Chemical Engineering

7–Computer Engineering

8–Aerospace /Aeronautical / Astronautical Engineering

8–Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering

9–Mechanical Engineering

Rice does beat UT in one thing, Biomedical Engineering where it is #6 (but as I said, I only know Rice as medical, so that makes sense).

But it doesn’t end there, let’s look at Business:

UT:

7–Overall Best Undergraduate Business

And for specialties:

3–Marketing

4–Management

4–Management Information Systems

4–International Business

6–Finance

6–Production/Operations Management

7–Entrepreneurship

8–Insurance

10–Real Estate

Rice doesn’t have any of ranking for business in the top 10. And this is using USNWR (AND it’s for UNDERGRADUATE) which you people love so dearly. People posting about UT being ■■■■■■ don’t know what they are talking about. There is merit for UT. If you want to do business or engineering, go to UT, if you want to do medicine, go to Rice.

Rice also has one of the top music schools in the county.

drax, huh?

are you kidding here?

I said that even though Texas Law is #15 ranked, that only a couple of law schools might do better than Texas Law in Texas. This is what I said:

As you can see, I am stating that Texas Law is very powerful in the State of Texas, considering it is only ranked #15 in the country.

I am sure Rice has a good music program. No one here is dissing Rice, Rice is a great school. I just think people shouldn’t discredit UT. Rice is stellar for medicine–hands down.

UT also (which I found out recently) has a great music program. I think it has the first or second largest music endowment, a student/teacher ratio of 7:1.

UNT (University of North Texas) also has a great music program (something many aren’t aware of). Especially in Jazz.

drax, the top Texas law firms go after the top Law School graduates in the country. The regional stuff is more for the hiring of engineering graduates. Please don’t confuse the desire of top Texas law firms to go after top graduates with top graduates wanting to live and work in Texas.

As an example, Vinson & Elkins, the Houston based firm, is considered the top Law firm in Texas. Although a big chunk of its 750 attorneys are from Texas Law School (215 or 29%), a fair share come from Harvard, Yale and Stanford (81 or 11%), with most being based in the State of Texas. In total, the top 10 law firms comprise 180 or 24% of the total Vinson & Elkins attorneys.

Oh yes, I don’t doubt that it is true. However, the question is how often that happens, and the response to that is a very strong … very rarely.

austinareadad, I fully agree with this…but somehow drax seems to think that the top law firms hire in the same regional way as companies hire local engineers.

xiggi, huh?

what is up with you?

you know better than this…

there are many UC Berkeley programs that are better than Stanford. In fact there are very few universities in the U.S. that compare across the board on a department by department basis to UC Berkeley - very few…

Well, do not hesitate to correct me. Go ahead and list those “many” programs!

xiggi, again, surprising that you would claim that UC Berkeley has NO departments, undergraduate and graduate that rank higher than Stanford. Very surprising.

HERE ARE 14 DEPARTMENTS THAT ARE RANKED HIGHER AT UC BERKELEY THAN STANFORD

You’re having problems comprehending your own statement:

“I would imagine that only Harvard, Yake and Stanford Law Schools would be preferable…”

How does this jibe with:

And nice sleight of hand:

Vinson & Elkins is an international firm. How many international firms are based out of Texas? One-five? How many regionalized firms are there, how many boutiques? Too many to count, correct?

So your one example of a firm that has “numerous” Yale, Harvard, Stanford grads doesn’t apply to the vast majority of law practices based in Tx.

Let’s look at CA, a far more popular destination for Stanford grads esp, along with Harvard and Yale:

[CalBar Membership]( <a href=“Attorney Demographics”>http://members.calbar.ca.gov/search/demographics.aspx</a>)

Stanford and Harvard grads make up ~ 5% of all CA bar-certified attys. Sure a lot of them are Californians who came home after studying at HLS and YLS, and stayed home at SLS.

YLS doesn’t even register a blip, partly because it is a lot smaller than HLS. How many more attys from the three elites you mentioned would be represented in CA’s demographics over TX’s?

I’d say a lot more…

Sure, international firms can recruit nationally and internationally. Part of this is placement where the grad most desires.

But what you have to understand is there’s a cost to recruitment of H,S, and YLS grads. You better make sure that if the firm is going to pay to recruit some of these elite l grads, that some better come to Texas with you, or it will be absolute sunk cost.

I’ll let you go, because I’m guessing you’re a high-schooler. Nice chatting… feel free to rebut…

2010 nrc rankings. Lol!
