I am a high school senior likely going into chemical engineering. I have:
34 ACT
5.06 GPA on a weighted 4.0
Class rank: 6/198 -at a private college prep high school if that means anything
Will have 6 APs by end of senior year (Bio, Chem, Calc BC, Stats, Spanish, and U.S. History)
As of now the colleges I am looking at are:
Illinois- in state
Purdue
Wisconsin
Texas
Clemson (would likely receive $15,000/yr based on ACT)
Texas A&M
Other schools I’m considering but not so heavily are:
Vanderbilt
UVA
Iowa State
Georgia Tech
Based on rankings and reputation I feel like U of I or Purdue is the no-brainer, any advice on these programs and which would be the best for landing a good job right out of college?
Those are good options, but why don’t you put UMN-TC to the list. It has one of the top ChemE program in the country.
Just a quick question: how do you have a 5.06 with only 6 AP’s? Are you an IB student? If not, that GPA will go way down for the college recalculations. Nonetheless, U of I is definitely a good option, as are
The grading scale at my scale is not like most schools
An “A” starts at 93% and up and = 4.00
But you can earn higher than a 4, for instance a 96 = 4.43 and 99= 4.86 (my school doesn’t give 100s). Also any honors OR AP class adds 1.00. So basically I have that 5.06 by taking honors classes plus APs.
I understand. Yeah, when colleges recalculate that GPA, it’s going to be more like a 4.4 or 4.5.
^ Most schools (except UC) would actually use uwGPA in 4.0 max scale.
Sorry, my first comment got cut off for some reason. It was supposed to say "U of I is a great option, as are Purdue, UT, TAMU, and Ga Tech. And I don’t know the official numbers, but I have trouble believing that “most” would use UW. I could be wrong, though.
I’m surprised you’re not looking in Ivy-land, to be honest. You could probably add Cornell, Columbia, and Princeton as reaches for solid ChemE programs with good placement, etc.
@tigerrocks13 You just need to look at the CDS from different schools. The admission GPA is listed there.
@codemachine His stats are certainly impressive, but his ECs will need to be amazing (as will his essays, recs, and basically everything else) to get into the Ivies. It’s not just about raw numbers.
Yeah, what ECs are you involved in, if any?
Club volleyball 5 years
High School Volleyball 4 years (captain twice)
Math Team all four years
Coached youth volleyball teams
Mission Trip to Wisconsin
I realized they’re not that impressive which is why I’m not expecting to get into schools like the vandy and the ivies. Tbh I’m not really wanting to go to an Ivy anyway.
