I am going to be starting my junior year of high school in a couple of weeks and I’m starting my college search. Right now I want to eventually have a career as a talent agent. However, I don’t know what to look for as major that will lead to this career path. I was thinking about schools in southern Atlantic area (MD,VA,NC,SC). However, this may be a problem for internships wich is a big part of the industry. I always dreamed of going to California but I don’t know if travel from my home in NJ to Cali is realistic for my family. If anyone has advice on where to go from here it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Arts Management majors, coupled with business minor is probably your best bet, as an agent is primarily negotiating contracts. Although Los Angeles has a vibrant talent agency industry, the opportunities in NY are also pretty good. Since you’re in NJ, it’s probably best for you to stay in the area to take advantage of internship opportunities.
You’re right to be concerned about those opportunities, as connections and internships, along with who you know, are instrumental in gaining employment in that field.
