I'm thinking of becoming an accounting major, what are some of the best universities for this particular major?

Texas, Notre Dame, UIUC, Michigan, USC, Michigan State, IU, UVA, etc.

Is it called accounting major or it is a subset of business/marketing

School doesnt matter for accounting, just make sure the big 4 recruit there and get a decent GPA.

Texas and Illinois are famous for their accounting programs. Stern also has a CPA accounting track, which prepares students very well.

and yet no one mentions BYU

BYU has a great accounting program, but I wouldn't say it's a school for everyone.

Texas is the best for accounting.

that is a ridiculous statement to make. Where is your evidence?

Are you serious?

Are you kidding me? You are really going to quantify one school as being the best? My question is plain and clear, yet it remains utterly profound and cloudy in the mind of some readers. There is no best school, but there is a cluster of great schools. That is why i am questioning the statement denoting Texas as the best. His response represents a singular school, and to literally claim that UT Austin is in fact number one, we would have to take into account a yet to be measured number of variables and opinions. Possible - no its not.

I think Mr Payne was refering to redhare's statement about BYU being not for everybody because its a mormon school. Anyways, any school that has big 4 recruiting is a decent accounting school. Don't choose an undergrad based on accounting program rankings; just go to a target.

The best rankings

That I was.

As one who was kicked off the BYU campus for wearing shorts and a Tshirt, it is not for everyone, for sure.

Is recruiting at Austin good?

Yes it is, every school thus far listed in this thread has great recruiting.

Recruiting for accounting is pretty good at every school in the top 25 on barron's list above (see the weblink).

There is a real shortage for accounting majors right now--although you need to be aware that the CPA firms will concentrate on hiring those with 3.5 GPAs and above out of college (and the GPA will need to be higher for a smaller school like Cal State San Jose where a 3.8 will be necessary, but less for those in the better known schools like Texas, Berkeley, Illinois, and Penn--like 3.2-3.3 GPA and above).

Is there a list of the target schools where the the big 4 recruit? Do you know if UConn, Delaware, Maryland and/or Fordham are target schools? Is a 3.5 good enough at theses schools?

That's interesting. All those accounting scandals several years ago got a lot more college students interested in pursuing accounting. The statistics a couple of years back indicating the rise in accounting majors revealed that. I haven't checked up on those statistics recently. Perhaps the memory of those scandals is beginning to fade away.
