Best Schools For An Art History Major??

Well I live in Florida. I'm really into art history and I want to go to a liberal arts college or a university with a solid liberal arts curriculum.

I've already applied to Florida State, City College of New York and UF (although now I really don't want to go there). So far my top choice is FSU, only because of their strong liberal arts department and scholarships. I would love to go out of state if I don't get into FSU, but only to northeastern states (especially New York, Mass. and Pennsylvania). Ok, so enough rambling, these are my stats.. please let me know where I have a chance and some other schools I should consider applying to. Thanks!

great art schools or universities with strong liberal arts would be terrific!

NYU seems to have a great art history program (my s's minor).

Well, I think that UPENN is worth looking into. They have a massive art collection. One of my friends just went there to be an art history major and she just loves it!

Allison

I don't think my stats are high enough for either of those schools... any other suggestions?? Like decent schools that are not uber-impossible to get into?

:} thanks

lavita, your grades and rank are very good and once you edit and focus a bit your total resume will be very good as well. Your scores are on the low side for very selective colleges, especially in relation to your grades, but maybe there's an explanation. If you've only taken them once, why don't you do some prep work and try again. Are you by any chance an under represented minority? If yes you could expect the colleges to cut you some slack on your scores.

Almost all large universities have strong art history departments. Some that come to mind are Michigan and Virginia but there are many others as well.

For medium sized colleges, all of the ivy league is good (maybe less so for Dartmouth) plus NYU, Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins.

Among small liberal arts colleges Williams is one of the best in the country for studio art and art history but it is also very selective. Others that are very good in a range of selectivity: Weselyan, Oberlin, Vassar, Hamilton, Kenyon, Skidmore, Bard, Conn College. If you are female, take a look at Smith and Bryn Mawr.

Art schools are a whole different category.

Tufts, University of Rochester, Vassar, BU (much larger than the others) all have excellent art history departments. And if you want a school that focuses on art, there's the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

You might want to go to the College Board website and use their College Finder service. It allows you to search by type of school, location, and major. Once you have that list, you can review their websites or come back here and ask about specific schools.

Ucla(great opportunities at the Hammer or Getty),Princeton or Harvard for great scholastic tradition. But before pursuing art history, you might want to consider what type of art history you are interested in and choose the department accordingly. Connoisseurship, stylistic analysis, iconography,
social history et al. University departments tend to have stregnths according
to specific disceplines.

This sounds like good advice, because you're getting wild suggestions IMHO that don't fit your stats, and you don't want to be way off the mark. Great to have a coupla reach schools, but you also need some matches and safeties.

I did think of Goucher College in Baltimore, which has an Art major (concentration can be in Art History) as well as an Arts Administration major.

Baltimore is a great city for art (with the Walters Gallery for classical, and the
Baltimore Museum of Art on the Hopkins campus for modern.

You'd have to check out if you like Goucher and want to be in Baltimore. I grew up there and today (now that I'm not there) it's a good city with the Harborplace area downtown. Goucher itself is uptown.

I was an art history major, too, and really enjoyed it. My interest was sparked by staring at a Degas sculpture of a ballerina in the Baltimore museum, from early on she just inspired me!

Truthfully I don't know if Goucher's art history department is good or great. I just know it's not impossible to get into the school!

I think Conn College is strong in art history and I think it's an SAToptional school. Also Bard is good and while selective not the most selective.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone :}

what about ucsd's art history program? anybody have any say?
