Best schools for art education

D is thinking about pursuing an undergraduate degree in art education. I know there are several routes to achieve this...BFA programs in art education, BS programs in art education, and programs that offer a BFA (or BS) combined with a MAT degree in 5 years. Of course, she may decide to get her BFA in art and then pursue her masters in education separately.

She wants to stay on the east coast...about 5 hours driving time from NYC. She will consider art schools, liberal art colleges or universities.

Any imput on the quality of the art education programs out there?

A broad list would include: Pratt, NYU, SUNY Purchase, SUNY New Paltz, Syracuse, BU, SVA, MICA, Goucher, Townson, Penn State and UVM.

Does anyone have experience with these programs or any other suggestions? Thank you!

she could also apply to either brown or hopkins or both and get to attend RISD/MICA as a benefit of great undergrad academics :)

MICA is well-known for its art education program. Moeover, it is one of the few programs that have a five year BFA/MFA leading to art education.

New Paltz has a strong art education program. My son is not an art education major but he is an art major and did take an art education class last semester. He loved the class and the professor.

RE: Art Education programs

Husband was down in the Baltimore area on business. Since this is our second child, he is very well broken in and called me from the road to say he was making a U-turn to take a look at Goucher’s campus which he had just passed. He reported back that it was a beautiful campus in a good area…surrounded by a forest and with a high end mall practically a walkable distance.

Anyone know about Goucher’s reputation for studio art/ art education if D decides to go the liberal arts college route?

So her list probably stands at:

Art Schools: Pratt, RISD, MICA, Parsons, FIT, Cooper Union, SVA
Liberal Arts (BFA programs): American, NYU, SUNY Purchase, SUNY New Paltz, U of Hartford, U of Delaware, Syracuse, BU
Liberal Arts with Ed Degrees possible: Goucher, Townson, Penn State, University of VT
Liberal Arts (BA/ BS): Skidmore, CW Post, Sarah Lawrence, Bard, Brandeis, Vassar

We have plenty of time to reduce our list, but will probably start some “casual” road-trips during her sophomore year. She is also a singer, so a school that would allow her to take voice lessons and take part in performances is a definite plus.

Any imput on these schools/ art programs/ overall student types/fit is appreciated!

I live here in Maryland and have known several folks who attended Goucher. Their reputation is that they have a good liberal arts program and a very nice campus, which I have seen.

However, they are NOT well-known for arts education; moveover, don’t have a major in “arts education.” MICA is more well-known for that. However, that said, Goucher is known for having a good education program, and students can take some courses at MICA. However, frankly, for the same price, I would send my daughter to MICA over Goucher for art or art education.

MICA’s MAT program has 100% job placement. I was planning on doing it, but my mom, who is a teacher, thinks becoming an art teacher won’t pay off five years of MICA’s tuition.

^^Unfortunately, your mom’s probably right! :)

I believe that Maryland, and some other states, may have a policy of loan foregiveness if someone goes into teaching. This should be investigated.

Moreover, under a new law dealing with student debt, federally provided debt can be made into “direct federal debt” whose repayment is based on income. In addition, any balance of interest and principal due after 10 years would be forgiven if the student goes into federal or state government such as teaching.

hey! i am a chinese college student.i wanna go to US to study animation…how can i do???

I can give you some insight on SUNY New Paltz. As mentioned above, my son is a student there. He is a graphic design major. They are well known for their art dept. but it’s nice to get a well rounded education at a liberal arts university. My son had no problem getting the classes he wanted and he’s a transfer student. The school tends to have a more artsy population but education, business, anthropology, international studies, biology, etc. are popular majors too. The student population is friendly and down to earth…a refreshing change from his previous school. Last semester he roomed with psychology, physics and photography majors. This semester one of his housemates is a business major. So I have to say there are so many different types…a lot of diversity of interests but all really nice kids. It is a pretty low key environment but always a lot going on. My son is always busy - there is a lot going on in the surrounding area and at the school. It is easy to get involved and make lots of connections with people. Everything is close by and its a pretty tight knit community.

If I can answer any specific questions, let me know. Good luck with your search.
