Hi im a sophmore at Virginia Tech and id like to go into federal law enforcement(cia, fbi, etc.) after college. My school doesnt offer a degree in cj so i was wondering if any of you knew the best schools for this degree. Also another question i had is if any of you knew whether i should be considering a different major to work for a federal law enforcement branch. Ive heard they want you to have a specialty instead of just majoring in cj but im not sure, but if so id like to know what they are looking for if any of you know? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Criminal Justice Programs are widely available, usually most are offered at regional and smaller state colleges and not big name schools.

I know that two big Criminal Justice programs are at Northeastern and George Washington University. But Northeastern, IMO, has the most impressive program in the country and deserves a closer look.

And yes they aren't simple criminal justice majors you see at a community college, these are schools of criminal justice with concentrations in Policing, Security, Legal Studies, Criminology, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Law Enforcement Administration, etc.

To get into Federal law enforcement I suggest you spend some time as a street cop especially if you're interested in DEA. If you stay at VT I suggest you go to work for the University police department. Some schools have students as aides or clerks and some as sworn officers. I don't know what Tech does. That would be great experience which would be complementary to the classroom.
