Best Schools for Math Majors?

I'm interested in studying math at an affordable public school, preferably one with nice merit aid.

What are some good schools other than U.Mich., UWis., Berkeley, and all the other tops? I'm most interested in schools that teach math well, irrespective of whether the math faculty are the highest-ranked researchers or not. Anyone know of some friendly programs with good teachers and a lot of research opportunities?

Some schools I've considered are UMinn., UMinn-Morris (a public LAC), Truman State (another public LAC), U-Missouri-Columbia, UKansas, K-State, and Michigan Tech. I realize these aren't necessarily the best math research schools, but as I've said, I'm interested in good undergrad. teachers, as opposed to research powerhouses.

BTW, I'm particularly interested in pure/general/theoretical math as opposed to applied math.

if you eliminate the elite/top schools, then you can't really distinguish between the rest and it's up to you to research that school and find out if they have what you like.

i almost forgot some suggestions....

U Illinois - Urbana Champagne
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of Washington - Seattle
Pennsylvania State U. – University Park
Univ. of Maryland – College Park
Ohio State University – Columbus

thanks for the advice. I'll look at those.

Consider Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA. It's expensive, but you can apply for financial aid and see what you get.

are you kidding me? harvey mudd is one of the toughest schools to get into.

Well, it fits the description, i'd say.
