I am a high school Junior with a particular interest in Transportation Engineering, so I plan to major in Civil Engineering. However, I would not only like to go to a school with a good Civil program; I'd like to go to one with good resources and classes in Transportation Engineering. Anyone know of any schools like this that I should look at?

Northwestern has probably the best transportation reserach center in the nation.
[Transportation Center - Northwestern University](http://www.transportation.northwestern.edu/)
[Undergraduate Transportation & Logistics Minor | Transportation Center - Northwestern University](<a href=“Transportation & Logistics Minor: Northwestern University Transportation Center - Northwestern University”>Transportation & Logistics Minor: Northwestern University Transportation Center - Northwestern University)
[Civil and Environmental Engineering : McCormick School of Engineering : Northwestern University](<a href=“Civil & Environmental Engineering | Northwestern Engineering”>Civil & Environmental Engineering | Northwestern Engineering)

Northwestern doesn’t has transporation engineering major (only MS/PhD) but I don’t know if any school offers that at the undergraduate level. Its civil engineering dept offers few courses related to transportation. You may want to look into their industrial engineering and management sciences department also, if you are interested in the traffic flow, logistics…etc, rather than highway design.

I doubt there are that many undergrad programs out there. Have you done a google search? I found Texas A&M has one. https://www.civil.tamu.edu/areas/transportation/requirements.html

According to College Navigator this is only available at the graduate level. Here is the list of schools, if I selected “Bachelor’s degree” I got no matches. Some of these may have a concentration though at the BS level.

Don’t know why UMass Amherst didn’t show up in the list!

WPI has a concentration in TE at the undergrad level, I bet many schools do too.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I’ve done some Google searching and have found some programs, but I’m having a hard time telling if they’re good because I can’t find any outside information on them.

Can you contact someone in the field and ask if they have any recommendations as far as transportation engineering goes? Often, if few schools offer the program, most people in the profession come from other, related, disciplines.

Probably need to go through faculty rosters and course offerings of civil engineering departments to see if there are course offerings and research opportunities in transportation engineering.

Here’s a list of courses available in the Transportation & Logistics Minor program at Northwestern:
[Transportation & Logistics Minor Requirements | Transportation Center - Northwestern University](<a href=“Transportation & Logistics Minor: Northwestern University Transportation Center - Northwestern University”>Transportation & Logistics Minor: Northwestern University Transportation Center - Northwestern University)

[University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute](http://www.umtri.umich.edu/news.php)

MIT has a few undergraduate transportation courses in the CE dept and a lot of graduate ones. You should be able to take one or two as an undergraduate. You should also be able to do undergraduate research in transportation.

Any good civil engineering program should offer you a solid grounding in transportation, if that is your desired specialization.

Here is a map of DOT-funded University Transportation Centers:
[2012 UTC Competition Selections | University Transportation Centers](http://www.rita.dot.gov/utc/about/grant_recipients/html/2011_competition_selections.html)

I realize this thread a few months old, but I am also somewhat interested in Transportation Engineering. Should I look into schools that have regional transportation centers? So far, it seems that Northwestern, Texas A&M, and University of Florida have solid transportation engineering offerings.

Any suggestions on other schools?
