Best schools for trumpet?

What schools or specific teachers would you recommend for a trumpet performance major? My S prefers a college/university as opposed to a stand-alone conservatory. He also wants to participate in jazz band while in college.

Any advice appreciated!

riparian: These are the universities that my son was interested enough to look into and/or visit based on a combination of teacher and overall program. I doubt that the jazz band opportunity would be available at all of them but would be easy to find out.

Indiana University
Northwestern University
DePaul University
Boston University
University of Michigan
Arizona State University
University of Maryland
Rice University

My son had really strong preferences of what he was looking for, so even his long list wasn't very long. There are probably many other good university based programs out there, and if you are willing to take the time, I suggest looking at this link, which is a list of the schools that have trumpet ensembles entered in the National Trumpet Competition. Taking students to a competiton at this level probably indicates a dynamic program that would be worth looking into.

University of North Texas has a well regarded jazz program...very competitive. If that is the type of performing you son wants to concentrate in, that would be a great choice.

A friend of my S's just auditioned at Juilliard for trumpet - grad school (not jazz, though) -- he stayed with my S over the weekend. S told me that even if the friend gets in, he may not go there -- because he just got accepted into Arizona State. Apparently the teacher there is a one person trumpeter factory, and - for grad school, at least - trumpet players get full scholarship. The trumpet teacher is extremely accomodating - giving extra lessons upon request, and has one of the highest rates of job placement upon graduation.

I suspect this isn't a jazz program, though, but thought I'd mention it in case some other trumpet players access this thread.

My son is a freshman trumpet performance major at Indiana University and loving it! His teacher is Edmund Cord, who is really great (according to my son). My son also applied to New England Conservatory, Oberlin, Lawrence, University of North Texas (great jazz program, but you will be taught by a grad student in the early years), University of Northern Colorado (terrific trumpet instructor and growing program), and Northwestern, which also has top notch trumpet instructors.

My son is currently playing in a jazz band at IU, along with a Chamber Orchestra. He was in a concert band last semester. He says the jazz band conductor is great, and he has learned a lot. He said he talked to one student who transferred to IU from New England Conservatory, and said IU has a better trumpet program than NEC.

An addendum after my son read the post: There are several jazz band conductors. What really makes the IU jazz program great is David Baker, head of the jazz program, who writes great music and has made the program top rate. And the opinion about NEC is, of course, one person's opinion.

And, about North Texas--whether or not you are taught by a grad student depends upon how good you are and whether you are a performance major. Some undergrads are taught by professors. UNT is nationally known for its great jazz program.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice!

Bumping for those currently looking at trumpet schools. Also want to say I know an excellent trumpet player graduating from St. Olafs this year.
