My Son is interested in Physics and Mathematics, Applied preferably,
We would like to start researching schools, SUNYs or not too expensive private Colleges. No Ivy leagues
Thank you

Stonybrook, Binghamton and Genneseo are the tops among SUNY’s IMHO
If your son has the stats for Stony Brook that would be my pick. Any of the “not too expensive private” colleges do not measure up against Stony Brook. In the Physics/Math/CS world Stony Brook is very well respected.
I know somebody who is a joint physics math major at Colgate (might be out of your price range though).
Agree with @kmrcollege : SUNY Stony Brook is definitely a well respected university for Applied Math. NYU Courant Institute is also well respected, and well known, but doesn’t fall in the category of “not too expensive” private! Smaller LAC’s are not going to offer the level of breadth in math courses, and usually tend to consist of profs who are more into undergrad research than in publishing at the national level (unlike the profs at SBU or NYU). Nothing wrong with that - just something to be aware of.
Don’t forget SUNY Buffalo. They are known for their sciences, health sciences, engineering, math.
RPI is a possibility - are you from NY? Does your school participate in the Rensselaer Medal program? http://admissions.rpi.edu/undergraduate/admission/freshman/rpimedal.html
Not necessarily “best”, but FWIW here are reported # degrees awarded to physics majors in 2013:
SUNY Geneseo 42
SUNY Stony Brook 39
SUNY Albany 25
SUNY Buffalo 19
SUNy Oneonta 17
SUNY Binghamton 15
Schools that may give merit aid:
RPI 52
U Rochester 28
