Best schools in the south

So I am largely looking at the south for college (along with California), so I was wondering how people would rank the top southern schools. This is what I think (in order):

Duke
Rice
Vanderbilt
Emory
UNC
Davidson

I guess a lot of it depends on what you consider the south (for instance is Missouri the south?), but does this list seem right?

List looks about right to me. What are you ranking them on, though? Academic reputation/prestige?

Looks pretty good. Also UVA can be considered in the south.

Yeah, definitely UVA. What do people think of William and Mary?

Virginia is slightly southern in attitude but it is NOT part of the South. North Carolina probably isn’t either.

South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee

These are “the south”

Generally, I’d think, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina are all considered to be part of the South. The Mason-Dixon line seems to be the only real way to mark where the South begins… (But then, I know many Southerners from Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia who would disagree.)

Duke
Emory/Vandy/Rice (if we’re counting texas)
UVA
UNC
Tulane/Wake/GT
Texas

Best schools below Mason Dixon line:

LAC-

Washington & Lee
Davidson

LAC hybrids-

Wake Forest
William & Mary
Rice

Natl research U-

Johns Hopkins
Georgetown
Duke
Vanderbilt
Emory

Best big publics-

UVirginia
UNorth Carolina
UFlorida

^you forgot UTexas for the big publics

I’d probably add a few non-PhD granting schools into the mix, such as Trinity U, Rollins and Furman

I’d also add Tulane to the Research Universities

you should add Clemson to that list :p

Just noticed that neither Virginia nor North Carolina are big publics. Also, Georgia Tech should be included even though the school is rather narrow in focus.

Southern schools are generally not as strong as schools on either coasts.

That being said, some of the southern technical schools such as Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are probably underrated. They provide quite a rigorous education.

^^ This may rank as one of the stupidest posts on the forum. Congratulations.

^ Thank you. You’re too kind.

I’d move Davidson up into the Duke Emory/Vandy/Rice echelon.

I had posted this on another thread and thought it applied here so I copied and pasted. Certainly not all inclusive but a good list of Southern Schools.

I agree with you MomofWildChild.

But if that “perception” keeps people like happymedstudent AWAY from schools in the south - then it works for me!

Why would anyone ever think that VA and NC are not southern states? Unbelieveable!

^^^
I agree PackMom. They are DEFINITELY southern states. No question. Shoot, if you go by the Mason-Dixon line - you add West Virg, Maryland and Delaware to the list of southern states.

Duke

Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice, Wake Forest, UVA, Tulane, Washington and Lee, William and Mary, UNC, Georgia Tech, Davidson

Florida, Texas, Georgia, Rollins, Elon, Furman

DC and Maryland do not have really southern schools.
